Magnification question

Quick question. I have not shot past 100 yards with a 6mm. Let's say mid level glass ...what scope magnification would I need to see my shots on white paper at 300 yards? And what magnification for 500 yards?

I’ve got “old” eyes… but can see 6mm holes @300 on a good/clear day with 24X power...

Except for hunting, I go with as much magnification as I can afford. (aim small, miss small).

Minimum, good quality glass 24x. 32-36x can do it with mid teir optics. Clear day is one thing, but lighting angle can change that quickly. Shooting west in the afternoon can hide everything on the target.

Magnification is your friend.......In most cases, you can always turn it down. Go with a high-quality 10-60....

At 76 I see 6mm holes at 500yds with my Sightrons 10x50x60 SVED. But like all scopes and powers depending on conditions not 100 % of the time. More like 85 to 90% of the time. A lot of the 60 or 55 power scopes I have seen darken or degrade the last 5x. The Sightron I speak of does not.

I shoot at 100m with 60x power.
I shoot at 800m with 60x power.
It would be difficult for me to shoot at competitive level using smaller magnification.

okay so it sounds like for my purposes, not planning on competition shooting, I'd use a ~36x and be good at 300. For anything further I'd need my spotting scope.

I don't have the budget for a quality 50x or 60x and I'm not really interested in a sub par 50x. Someday I'll have one, but with the cost of my first build, it's just not going to happen this year. So the plan will be to find a good mid tier variable up to 32/36.

Keep in mind that as magnification is greater, your field of view is smaller. This is a huge deal in BR or anytime flags are used, as you can't get the further flags up into the scope.

I'm getting more and more requests to build a larger wind flag. Not coincidentally, since the popularity of 60-80x power scopes has come about. The difference can't be made up by making a bigger flag...unless you want flags the size of a truck bed. I consider 40-46ish power to be ideal, especially with a raised crosshair when possible. That reticle just makes so much since! I wish it was available from every maker that offers a scope for competition use.

There is another critical component and that is objective lens diameter (Dawe's limit). You need a big enough objective lens to get the resolution needed to discern the 6mm holes (which will actually be smaller than 6mm unless you are shooting wadcutters.

For 500 yards and those tiny holes, you're looking at 50mm objective minimum and at 24X or more.
