Who makes .172" custom dies?

I recently received an email from a large company stating the following..

Hi Lincoln,

I apologize but we do not have the tooling that would be needed to make custom dies for this cartridge. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

They still make 17 hornet so I don't understand the problem please help explain this if anyone can.

The cartridge I need dies for will be a 45° 17VHA.

Chamber reamer, chamber reamer print, and fired (40° shoulder) & unfired cases, so, yep, most everything except the "oink" .

As mentioned by GLShooter, check with Hornady. A friend has them make dies for his wildcat chambers with good results.

From a MANUFACTURING standpoint (and realize this is my take on the situation), they COULD make what you are needing but they don't already have the tooling in place to do so and make a profit. Thus they state that they don't have the tooling IN PLACE to make what you need. I am guessing that this cartridge isn't popular enough for them to purchase or make the tooling and make money off of producing dies for it.

Why did you pick such an uncommon caliber. It's just asking for problems. There are many great calibers that are common. Sorry I don't mind following the pack. I have a 6BR and a 6BRX.

I agree with your assessment, it is not "in place" it would interrupt theit production run. However they DO HAVE THE TOOLING, since they produce and sell the .172" Hornady Hornet. Making these dies are done via EDM, so, probably not profitable. They may have even stopped their production of 17 hornet, yet they do list it as an item they will produce I wish they were just a little bit more transparent.

For the same reason you picked up a 6mm BRX, the case lifespan and definately not because it was easy, because it works better. Lower powder charge, @ 12.75gr water vs 14.5 gr water for the 17HH, so it is optimized for a shorter barrel, & still capable of the higher velocities with the lighter bullets. I wanted something better suited to my goal. If nobody else thought like me then why do we have hundreds of calibers? There were all wild cats at 1 time or another.

I'll probably end up using Hornady.

Never heard of reloading dies being EDM'd.

In response to another question about why did I pick such a difficult cartridge it's because it can perform almost everything from 17M2 to 17Hornet given the correct handload. It will even go down to 850fps with a 32gr cast lead RN on the right side with 1.2gr of 700X. On the other end of the spectrum you can go up to 3900 feet per second from a 18.75" barrel with the 17gr bullets on the left. 2950fps with H4198 and a 30gr.

Where some see difficulties, I see an advantage.
