WTB .280 Dubiel Die Set

The only book I haven't seen referenced so far in this post is Wolfe Publishing's Wildcat Cartridges, one of these 2 volumes may have the drawing. I looked for it online as archived but it's not out there. Cartridges of the World is archived but only has the 285 OKH.

I think you need to do the following:

1) Chamber cast to measure what you have.
2) Contact PTG, they can email you the drawings for the chamber and resize reamers they have.
3) Compare 1) and 2) above and make sure no one did anything else to it before you start spending money on an assumption.

I did find this drawing on post #13:

Thanks. I've been thru "Hell I Was There," "Big Game Rifles and Cartridges," and "Keith's Rifles For Large Game" and haven't seen any rifle built on a Remington 1917 action or with a stock like this. Still looking.... hope springs eternal!
Oh, missed that! It says Mauser action in the caption. Mea Culpa

Thanks.

Already contacted PTG and they graciously sent dimensioned drawing of their reamer. I found a discussion in Simmons 1947 "Wildcat Cartridges" of the .280 Dubiel with an unreadable copy of a picture that contains a diagram with both chamber & cartridge dimensions for Niedner's .280 Dubiel Magnum. Tracked that down to the July 1940 AR Dope Bag by F. C. Ness and have a readable version. So now I am comparing all of the data and waiting to hear back from Whidden, to get my rifle in hand at the end of the week and check fit on my only 2 unfired rounds and some new brass. Going to order some Cerrosafe too.

FWIW, there's a short mention of the 280 Dubiel in Phil Sharpe's Complete Guide to Handloading 1948 supplement p.202, It states that bullets are .288 to .289" unless you can get Vernor Gipson might make you a .284" barrel. It talks about 4350 with 160 & 180 gr bullets & Elmer's thorough coverage in his article in the 11-34 American Rifleman.

The data chart shows only 4064 & 15 1/2 as it predates 4350.

Thanks for the lead on Sharpe... another one I'll have to run down a reasonably priced copy of. I have the 34 AR article. Now I just have to learn how to reload!

It's not much to read. I quoted the highlights so you dont need to spend the exorbitant $$ people are asking for the book. It is still an interesting book though. The Wolfe Pub. reprint might be more affordable & it includes the supplement.
