338 rum and barrel length vs. velocity

working on a 338 rum and trying to determine Barrel length. I'm wanting to keep somewhat short 26+- but everything that I keep reading says 28-30 is minimum. I ran across this article on the lapua.
The 338 RUM / EDGE is ballistically equivalent to the 338 Lapua, so the Lapua barrel length test applies.

Will you reload or use factory ammo ?

You'll be able to optimise the load for your barrel length down to 24 inches, max velocity for minimum pressure as well as most complete powder burn, if you're prepared to experiment with different powders.

Even if you get the starting velocity in the book, it's still enough power to hunt anything that walks, with the right bullet.

Did you ever finish this project? What did you end up with on barrel length?

It looks like 34FPS is lost from 30" to 26" when using the heavy stuff. I would run 250-275
I have one with a 26 inch barrel. I run 250 accubonds at 3111fps and 300gr bergers at 2716fps. Both of the loads are with Retumbo. I also played around with a 338 edge with a 26 inch barrel and it would shoot 250's over 3200fps and 300 matchkings at 2850fps.

I would go with a 26 inch finish.

22” but have not put it through the chrono yet
22” indicates the use of a suppressor and a hunting rig, I’m curious where your numbers come in. Please share when you get that far.

I get long barrels for ELR shooting where you need all the velocity you can get and I also understand shorter barrels on hunting rigs when it’s a rifle you have in a pack and will be carrying for many miles or in rough country. Interesting project.

Precisely. My suppressor was only rated to 22” on the rum. I wanted to go shorter
