300 RUM Velocity / Thanks for the info !!

What would be the expected velocity of a 300 RUM with 240gr. bullet. Without destroying the cases. Max barrel length 30"?
Building a long range gun, Considering a 338LM w/250gr. ( because I have lots of 250gr. bullets) vs. the 300RUM w/240gr.

Thanks for all the information and suggestions. This challenged me to do some calculations on other possibilities. I have decided to experiment with the 215gr. Berger in my 30-338 Win Mag. With a BC of .696 with the 215gr. if I can achieve a velocity of 2800 to 2900 fps. This may accomplish my goal. I am looking for performance passed the 1000yd mark.

Re: 300 RUM Velocity

I can tell you that in my R.U.M. I get 3225f.p.s. with a 200gr Accubond and I have a 26" barrel. I have never shot anything heavier. However, my guess would be that you would get right at 2900f.p.s. with a 26" barrel. Go to a 30" barrel and you should easily go past the 3000 mark. If I were going to shoot the 240gr in a R.U.M. I would opt for H50BMG to gain the most from the 30" with that very heavy bullet weight.

Re: 300 RUM Velocity

The 240 Sierra has a very long bearing surface and hard to get velocity without pressure. It was an accurate bullet and set a lot of records in 1000 yard BR. I would probably try the 230 Berger or the 215. In a 308 Baer most could only get 2750 and that was pushing them in a 30 inch barrel. The bearing is a lot shorter in the 230. The 240 was not good for hunting as they just penciled through. I love my 338 Lapua IMP. Way more energy and less wind drift. I can get 3100 with a 300 grain Berger. Matt

Re: 300 RUM Velocity

I have a 300 RUM improved, Tomahawk, with a 30" barrel. The most accurate load I have with it is 95 grains of WC872 and it pushes a 240 SMK at 2860. It's deadly accurate. It worked so well I didn't try a hotter load with that powder. H50 BMG had good velocity, 3160 but accuracy was terrible. H1000 had good velocity with OK accuracy but not nearly as good as the WC872..

I believe the tomahawk has 5 to 7 grains more case capacity than a standard RUM, you'll have a hard time getting 3000fps out of RUM, 2750 to 2800 is more realistic, pressure will limit you more than case capacity

Re: 300 RUM Velocity

Having build both the 300WSM, 300Win Mag, 300 Weatherby, 300 RUM, 30/378 Weatherby, 338 Win Mag, 338 Edge, 338 RUM, and the 338 Lapua Mag.

Pick one where you can get the best brass and strongest action.

Re: 300 RUM Velocity

300 RUM with the 230 berger hybrid it wasn't hard to get 3100 fps out of a 30" barrel. if you weren't concerned about brass life you can push it up too around the 3200fps. Just make sure the reamer is throated long and you look at all the different powders.

+1, add in the 30/338L and 300 Allen Express if you're set on driving the heavy 30s

Re: 300 RUM Velocity

QuickLoad with 28 in. barrel and correct powder with 240 gr. Sierra 2700 to 2800 fps. Personally I would look at the heavy Bergers.

My nephew is starting load development on his, yesterday he got the 230s to 3050 with 97g RL33 in a 26" barrel.

I shoot a 30-338 Norma Imp. that has almost the same capacity as a 300RUM (within a grain or two of powder capacity with Norma brass). It's happy spot is 3045fps with 230 Berger's using 90grs of R-33 in a 30" Bartlein barrel with reformed 423 Dakota brass made by Lapua. In Norma brass I use 91grs at basically the same velocity.

Built two 300 rum for a customer. Both were 26" barrels, running the Berger 210s. 91grs of H1000 went 3150-3160 vel. Accuracy was consistent 3" at 1k. Three shot groups. Both were custom actions with Krieger barrels. Fed from bdl style Wyatt box mags.
