30BR...life after H4198

Did you sell "what you would never need" to other shooters?
I am keeping all 275 pounds of 4198 that I have left. I sold 176 pounds of LT30 to other shooters most of it for basically what I paid for it, $210.00 for an 8 pound container. i bought all of that stuff in 2015. Now LT30 has gone up at least 130 dollars a jug from 2015.

I started with N130 at this years Score Nationals and it shot really well. 35.7 grns was the load with my own 112 Bullet.

However, both Ed Bernabeo and I made a discovery this past two week ends.

The weather has turned cold, and it now acts way too slow. In short, it did not shoot anywhere near as well as it did in 80+ degrees.

Lt-30 shot pretty darned good today at 33 degrees. I had to take the load up to 36 grains to even get 3000 fps and get it shooting at a competitive level.

So the plan will be to use LT-30 in cold weather, and N-130 when it warms up.
Just curious on your barrel length and diameter of your own bullets ?

Jackie..
Thanks for the insight!!
I will say too..one of us is a bit more dedicated to shooting than the other. Up in Wisconsin the thought of setting up in near freezing weather and having to snow blow a path to the targets isn't exactly the funnest thoughts

What you in Wisconsin call “cold weather” and what we reptiles down here on the Gulf Coast call “cold weather“ is a little different.

Anything below 40 degrees is borderline unbearable for us. :)

Rifle ready, brass prep, H322. RL-7. Benchmark, and 2 generic powder between 8208 and v130.
Just trying to find a velocity and if it's worth pursuing. Monday 90 percent change of heavy rain, Hope Tuesday will be dry and warm enough. Avoid weekends cause the rat tats are out.
I'm a 50 degree minimun outdoor shooter.

I ran across this searching something else. It may have been posted
before but here goes.....It has a general fit

Shooters World / Lovex / Explosia

"Buffalo Rifle".....Burn rate to be with AA-5774 and IMR-4198
Powder is narrow short cut. Powder has no surface deterrent or
burn modifier.

Maybe Laurie has had a liitle work with this ??

I've shot 30's for years at the 2960 node without any issues or trouble. I've always felt that speed kept the gun in tune most often and never felt any extra speed would forgive a bad windflag read.

A short update. Just got out to the range today. We were only forecast to get less than a 1" of rain. Well I'm glad they were wrong, we had 4.5" of rain in my rain gauge and I'm sure more at the club rifle range.
I'm slightly handicap on the 30BR because I never had, or shot the great H-4198 powder. I tested today
H-332 which shot well 36.5 grains 112 grain bullet approx 2990 fps and 36 grain was right at 2960 fps.
LT-30 and V-130 shot very close to the same. Primers may make a difference. We have a match this Sunday so Tomorrow I will focus on a match ready load. And start testing again next week weather permitting. Both my barrels are 23" long, Bartlien 17 twist H.V. One is on a wood stock and one on a carbon fiber stock. I looked at my notes from last year and RL-7 would be another good choice I show 3050 fps with 112 bullet. Primers make a difference. If I find a primer that works well, I like to get at least 20k so I dont run out in year or two. Note I seem to have better success with extruded powders for most accuracy. However as a hunter I killed most my deer with W-760.

Today LT30 vs V-130 vs RL-7. Every one of theses powders can push a bullet well over 3000FPS . RL-7 might have the edge for 3100 FPS. Match day will use LT-30. But if I had a lot of RL-7 it might be the cat’s meow.

Somewhere on this vast expanse of information we call a forum Mr. Robinette said 3020 - 3060 were the speeds we need to run the 112s through the 118s. If I'm wrong on that I'd like to know as I had one that when I changed power lots the speed was crazy high on the new lot of H4198, was running almost 3200 FPS (around 3175 I think).

Myself I like to stay in the slow lane on the 30br, I was getting good speed out of the RL-7 with room in the case. I hope someday to test with h4198. But if you have LT-30 you will get good results. LT 30 that’s available now.

I still have 10 12 lbs of H4198 so until I get down I may play with some N130 & LT30
