Bushing style fl dies

I have used forster fl dies for years, different calibers, with the expander installed I get less then .001 runout on outside of neck
i tried the redding s die I think its called, never could even get close to good runout on neck,I never have turned neck
i see where everybody are going to bushing dies? I just don’t get it?
I just target shoot

When using a FL bushing die, the first thing I’d suggest to anyone is to remove the expander in the die and throw it in the garbage. Try running the die with the expander removed. Also, make sure you do not lock the bushing down tight. It needs to free float in the die. When you shake the die up and down, you should hear a slight clicking sound from the bushing moving up and down

What Dave said should give you good results

Allows you to control bullet hold by simple bushing changes

A lot of the shooters I read about are often running a mandrel after the bushing die. I don't as I haven't felt it necessary. I'm loading Alpha 6.5 Creedmoor in a Redding FL S type bushing die. At first I wasn't happy with the consistency of runout. I switched to a SAC bushing and now have less than a thousand runout. I don't have the tools to measure the difference between the Redding and SAC bushing, but I'm happy with what the brass tells me.

If you have changed calibers, have you changed the type of brass? Do you anneal? There may be a difference how you are setting up the bushing as @Dave M. pointed out.

I run Lapua brass with almost everything, I anneal after every firing

Have any of you guys done what this guy did?
I haven't but I'm not having a problem. Maybe others having a problem have tried whatever it is he does, I haven't watched the video.

BTW, what is the runout you are getting and what cartridge are you loading? I check runout periodically but as Alex states, I haven't found neck or bullet runout to be much concerning. Interference fit is more important to me for fps consistency and damage to target.

Right now I’m getting less than .001 after full length resizing with forster die for 6gt,6.5cm,.223
rcbs the same for .308

Yes it does but you stated you left expander button in place, leaving you to only go up or less hold than the current button in your die.
I start load work with my middle bushing I keep 5 for the calibers I shoot letting me look at less and more hold
I meant a k&m expander mandrel

I did try the o ring not the other but I have tested on target at 1000 yards at Deep Creek shooting range and as Alex pointed out bullet release was much more noticeable on target than runout. I was fanatical about having perfect rounds with little to no runout, I have since abandoned that part of my program. I do check now and again and I have very little usually.

Agree. The Redding brand bushing last certainly leave a lot to be desired. They rarely measure the exact number listed on the bushing and often times the centerline is non concentric with the bushing body.

Being able to easily control neck tension (interference fit) is so much more important than runout. One is huge, the other pretty much irrelevant. Neck tension may be the most important factor in load development.
I agree 1000%. I literally stopped measuring anything to do with runout over two years ago. It is a meaningless measurement and as long as I’m shooting clean matches with high X count, I wouldn’t even consider measuring runout unless I tried a slew of other things to fix a poorly shooting rifle first, and even then I’d likely come up with another root cause for the problem before I’d drag out the old concentricity gauge. lol
