Can this be fixed ?

While trying to get the factory barrel nut broke loose I managed to bend the action. My question is could this be straightened enough for the bolt to cycle then a sleeve added for strength ? I would just use for targets so no big deal on it becoming a single shot. And if it can be done would it be about as strong as an aftermarket action ? Action is a Savage 110 btw. Obviously I would never try to sell it to anyone after this, but if I could save it for myself it would be worth it to me. 20231226_141454.jpg20231226_141503.jpg20231226_162417.jpg

I did that once. Used a short action wrench on a long action. Worse than yours, expensive lesson.

Get ahold of Savage, they might help you out.

It could be straightend.but personally I wouldn't bother.its already been stressed and bending it back will stress it more.you could also sleeve it and it MIGHT be ok.i would scrap it.i wouldn't put my own safety at risk and people around me.

Thanks for the replies. I was afraid that would be the answer but thought I'd try. I guess I'll start saving pennies for a new 110 trail hunter. They have the target port and you can get them from KYGUNCO for 474.00 shipped.

I doubt it would be a safety issue, as the part of the action that contains the pressure is not damaged.

But that looks pretty bad. Getting the bolt to function correctly without binding would present a problem

Also, I doubt a scope would ever set correctly on it again.

chunk it.

How did this happen?

I can not for the life of my figure out how it happened with a barrel nut wrench and an action wrench.

Were you using a pry bar in the action?

The short answer is yes, it can be straightened. The long answer is it will cost more than the action is worth. Our local Cabelas has had two used Savage 110’s for $250 each - no way anyone would do it for that.

I've definitely fixed things worse than that appears :)

Hell, look at some of the stuff Jackie has posted that they straighten. If he can fix some of that monstrous stuff this little object should be easy :p

Sorry. That's simply not possible.
It is if you're dumb enough to use a smaller block and place it in the slot after placing it on the action itself doesn't work. My gunsmith broke the nut loose for free. In hindsight I really wish I would have taken it to him first, but I've never had one stuck that bad and I've done a few.

But seriously if one of you could straighten and sleeve it for 500.00 or so it would be worth it to me for a good target action.

I was attempting to remove the barrel nut of a Savage 10 a few weeks ago, OEM pencil barrel was in a barrel vise, and I was smacking the nut wrench pretty hard with a rubber mallet, nut never broke free, then several attempts with a heat gun. Finally dug out the dremel tool and cut that damn nut off. First time I had to do that, stubborn is one thing, but that one was beyond stubborn. LOL

I have swapped barrels on a fair number of Savage rifles. One smooth nut job.
I have never clamped the action, ever.
I have several oak blocks I clamp barrels with, along with some ready for a hole to be bored in.
Never needed any heat either.
The smooth nut job was not as big of a pita as I thought it was going to be. Yes, a pipe wrench was employed to break it loose as it was being replaced any way. I was ready to split it with a dremel and cut of blade if necessary (this was prior to me having a lathe).

Dunno what Savage was doing for a while, some actions were full of what looked like bead blasting media. Even with the nut loose, the action was grinding crap coming off. Had 3-4 that way. Last one I took apart was clean.

The description the OP gives of his clamp up makes me cringe. Some study should be given of just exactly how a jam/ lock nut works.

I have seen a Mauser action with same end results, a large adjustable wrench was used :-o.

That sucks; I'd chalk it up to experience. I personally would never be happy with it corrected and would always wonder if I was leaving accuracy on the table after it was twisted.
