5x35 SMC

I got a call from By to bring my chronograph down to the range in 2008. Mine was within 10 fps of his. . > 5200 fps! I havent found the data in his logs for that load, but I remember that it was a problem finding bullets that would stay together. I did find data using the Barnes 26 g 35.5 g of H322 at 5166 fps and group size around .7”. Hard to shoot a good group when you are drooling over your chronograph!
Crazy, thanks for the input!

By didn't have anything to do with the 5200fps I think, it was either in 2017 or18 he may have passed by then. I talked and worked with Marty on the barrel the most, Mic called and we talked once.
I ordered the tooling for the barrel and made them 3 i believe and I think it was a 3G 13 twist.

I was at the range when By shot more than 5200 FPS. He wanted to verify it with my Oehler chronograph. I also shot the rifle, so I can say I launched a bullet at > 5200 fps. Getting a bullet to stay together was the issue. Barnes varmint grenades solved that problem

T5hey designed many cartridges: 22/32, 22/40, 6mm/55, 6.5/65, and 30/100. there are drawings for 25 and 27 cal cartridges as well. I have the reamers for all of these, and have one rifle in each of those. The 5/35 is an incredible prairie dog cartridge.

Are there any links to 30/100SMc, cant find anything about it?

Maybe he was there with Mic and Marty dont know, I was under the impression when Mic and Marty did it was the first time over 5200fps

I like the long neck on it. You've just gotta wonder when the limit is reached on case capacity vs bore diameter. jd

Howdy -

Ballistician Homer Powley ( " Powley Computer " ) had some of his tech writings published in the " Guns and Ammo 1974 Annual ", in an article titled " The Powley Papers ".
Homer included a " Typical Expansion Ratio Chart " covering 35 cartridges ( including wildcats ); and listed expansion ratios ( ER ) for each; in barrel lengths of 20", 24"; and 28" .

Powley's article also included a very enlightening chart, that allowed one to graph an expansion ratio for notional .20" through .50" calibre barrels of 28" length.
Since one of the contributors to a rifle's expansion ratio is " total volumne of the gun ";
his chart lists power charge as one of the variable parameters.

On the expansion ratio chart, Powley did not include any graph line for ERs lower than 4. That is apparently because a rifle with an ER of 4 or less would be comparatively inefficient by nature of it's being " overbore capacity ". A small number of shooters might deliberately make or have made a rifle with such a low ER; but it might likely be a specialized set-up.... for one corner of the performance envelope.

It is not uncommon for a low expansion ratio gun to require a very large powder charge for it's bore diameter. The 5/35 SMC was designed to make efficient use of its powder charges, and per Powley's ER chart; would not approach a large charge/overbore/ low ER
situation in that calibre.

By was not with Mic and Marty. This was done before 2013. As I said before, I WAS THERE when it was done!

Other than the radius on the shoulder, what’s the difference between it and a 20BR?
I like speed, but I would think 500-750 and any usable accuracy would be gone.
My 20BR patiently awaits attention. I have enough 55’s to wear it out I think.

I disagree on the round count projections. I just borescope a 5/35 Smc barrel that had approx 250 rds down it, and it looked like it hadn't eve been fired. Every shot was over 4000fps.

The " normal " " overbore" debates just aren't as simple as case capacity and throat/barrel life. Some designs are light years ahead if others. The SMc line is one of those. I have a 17/23 and the 5/35 personally and have been shooting them for over 10 years, so I have a little experience with them.

With the help of Eric Mayer from Varment Hunter magazine he emailed me the info on the Martin Wanager and Mic McPherson 5300FPS with the barrels I built them, I think he said the article was in Trigger magazine.
Anybody interested p.m me your email and I will forward it to you.

I am lucky enough to live 1 mile from Mic and he is a member of our local gun club. I have had many conversations with him and the knowledge that man has is remarkable. Not sure if he messes with the big bore lever guns anymore, i think he writes more than he gunsmiths these days. I will ask next time we sit down to bs

The rifle that created the question for this thread is still up for sale with dies and brass. After all the history shared here I’ve looked at it a couple times but haven't done anything about it. If someone buys it I hope they share the results, it’s a neat chambering.

EDIT; auction shows that it has ended.…
