New coyote rifle

Hey everybody, I recently got a new coyote rifle. It is a tikka t3x varmint in 223 rem with a super varmint stock. This is my fourth bolt action 223 , I absolutely love them for predator and varmint hunting not to mention gophers here in the prairies. I am shooting 75 gr Hornady match bthp with 22.8 gr varget seating .020 off the lands. Also have a decent load with Hornady 55 gr btsp , needs a bit more tuning but is doing great and very cheap bullets so I love it. Here is a picture of a seating depth test I did with both the 55gr and 75 gr bullets. Anyway just having lots of fun and wanted to share my experience.

Went out this morning here and got skunked but it was a nice morning to get out and it was a spot that I walk to from the yard so didn't have to burn any diesel. How do ya like my shooting sticks ? I needed shooting sticks and didn't wanna spend the money so a couple old hockey sticks dod the trick , used a bit of old conveyor belt from a grain conveyor for the grip pads where the rifle sits. Works great

Im going out Tuesday morning, hoping will be a good day. Just has a good rain storm roll through, sometimes that gets them moving around since more water in areas.

Good luck , hopefully it's a good hunt. We are having very strange weather here , it's normaly -30 and over a foot of snow this time of year and we've been getting above 0 Temps and also had some rain the other day.

Oh ya and also the magazine in my rifle if made by a guy in alberta Canada and they are $37.50 canadian and they function very very well and have lots of room for long vld style bullets I recommend checking them out. His website is mag3d.ca

Son in law bought a T3X stainless in 7mm-08 , I got to put my hands on it today, very nice rifles! Head and shoulders above a Ruger American! LOL, I've been using Varmit Al's bi fur pods for years, cheap, handy, very effective for the given purpose. I even shot a yote with them extended upright as an off hand support once at about 100yds. I like them better than any of those hi dollar tri pods that are all the rage today.

Oh man that's gonna be a great rig , 7mm-08 is one of my favorite cartridges. I bought my wife a 7mm-08 in a win model 70 featherweight and when she comes coyote hunting with me she brings that with 120gr speer bullets traveling just over 3000fps and it is not fur friendly to say the least but it is fun to shoot any way haha. And yes these shooting sticks are great , just a bolt , a nut and some old hockey sticks and away ya go, only thing I want to change is that I didn't make the spikes that contact the ground long enough so they slip sometimes but that's an easy fix.

My Tikka T3 22-250 will be here in a few days. The handloads I have a lot of, are loaded to standard factory specs with a 52 gr. Sierra. I hope they'll shoot with that short O.A.L. Anyone have input on that?

My 223 I posted here loves those bullets , I call them garbage cans cuz of the gigantic hollow point but dang they are accurate little bullets and I've never had one exit a coyote. Here is a picture of a powder charge test I did with them , after that test I did the seating depth test and I'm pretty sure they ended up liking a .015 jump best in my gun with that powder. But ya the throats in the tikkas is really short but those 52 speer hp varmint bullets at .015 jump in my 223 have the base just below the neck shoulder junction so they fit ok.

Thanks, just knowing the throat in the Tikka tends to be short, is encouraging. When 22-250 rounds are seated to SAAMI O.A.L., they look comically short. However, the last rifle of this caliber that I owned, loved that seating. It runs against everything I know on the subject, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
My benchrest guns, for the most part, like a square land mark on the bullet when fully seated.

Crumster, what bbl twist are you getting in your Tikka? I'm using a 1-8" Tikka with my thermal for coyotes.
Looks like most of their 22-250's are coming with a 1-14" twist.

I'm getting the T3 specifically to get a 1:14 twist. I know most everyone is going for the faster twist, heavier bullet mode, but there are a few reasons I choose the slower twist, lighter bullet path.
Probably more than anything, is I'm old and set in my ways. There are other reasons but that is mainly it.
1. I'm a speed freak. I love the red mist.
2. Hydraulic shock that the speed produces means instant kills.
3. I never hunt anything larger than a coyote with a .22.
4. Since I don't eat those varmints, I don't have to be concerned about lost meat.
5. I know I can get tiny groups with those Sierra's.
6. Nearly -0- recoil lets you see bullet impact.
7. I could go on but being old, I'm tired..........
