Prepping NOS Fajen Mauser Stock for finish -- Ink Stamp?

So I got the stock and a white line spacer with it as well. It is a nice Walnut

It looks like it is already a nice 400 grit. It appears to need nothing but finish.

Now for the question. It has what looks like an ink stamp the size font on pack of ciggerets on the bottom of the forend that says "Fajen" in black at an angle. Is this designed to be sanded off inspite of the already nice finish?

I am guessing that they want you to wet it let it fur and sand it again and this was to force you to do that. That is a SWAG though and total assumption.

Why would anyone do that though? It seems odd that they would sand this to 350-400 grit and have all the lines nice and crisp and then stamp it with in in a place that you would be forced to sand it out.

So why is it there? What is the best way to remove it?

Never seen anything like this. Most blanks and semi-finished stocks I have purchased had writing in pencil never ink or paint or anything like that!

Could of been dealer display . I remember seeing many stocks almost finished as what you could do with their stocks , and it represented the grade of walnut you could expect.

Interesting did not think of that. This is why I asked. It just seems strange to do and I do not think big business does random things!

Why?

What would a pic of what is clearly a rubber ink stamp of the brand on the stocks forum accomplish that my description does not?

Not trying to be a jerk either I am being serious what would a picture of this accomplish or do? In many cases a photo is a plus but in this case explain to me how it would help or change the advice?

It would just be nice to see what your looking at is all.....

Sand it off with 400. If you dissolve the ink, it’s just going to soak into the wood like any stain solution.
What kind of finish will you be using?
Addition after some thought: I’d leave it on there. A pretty, old Fajen stock oughta be given its due. It will be a neat conversation starter.
On why you should post pics: ‘cause we’re a curious group that appreciates neat old gun stuff. Show us some “leg!”;)
Would you rather “describe” daisy dukes or see a picture?IMG_4843.jpeg

I owe you an appology! So I just got the stock recently and only briefly unwraped it and stuck it back in the box and into the closet.

So today I was going to take a picture of it since what you asked was not unreasonable at all. I read it wrong or rembered it wrong. As soon as I got it out of the box and unwrapped it and rolled it over to take a picture I realized I was way wrong! It does not say Fajen even though it was sold as a Fajen NOS stock. It actual says "FN Mauser". So that answers that and why it was stamped on it.

So I am sorry I was snarky about taking a picture.

There’s a human nature thing called “good enough” that causes finger prints, sanding marks and a bunch of other defects to be left intact. My guess is the stamp is to prevent guys from not doing a final sanding before it’s finished - there can be defects that can’t be seen until a finish is applied and I’ll guarantee there are little bumps to the surface just from normal handling. When working around finishers nothing makes me hotter than seeing finger prints, dents or light pencil marks under the finish. I’ve refused to work with some guys because they do this regularly.

Well if a picture is worth a 1000 words...
