7 mm mag

I’m new to the big stuff my brother in law is 81 & give me his 7 mm mag ruger paddle tail or something like that he call it I don’t know but anyway it’s a plastic stock but anyway I’m looking for information on a good bullet choice or loaded ammo you can buy or I can reload but don’t have dies for it and won’t shoot it that much so looking for a good deer round say out to 500 yds

The most accurate hunting bullet in my M70 7mm Rem Mag has been the 160gr Nosler Partition. Both in Federal premium ammunition and in my handloads using RL25. I have also had good hunting performance using the 139gr GMX bullet as loaded in Hornady Superformance ammunition.

Been shooting 7mm Rem Mag for 30years and reloading for several other buddys that shoot the big 7. My rifle is a Nesika long range and regularly shoot deer 400yds plus. Bagged this 12 point this year at 500yds. I found a load of RL-22 and a Nosler 140 gr BT, Fed 215M primers is death ray for deer.

Exactly. IMR 7828, federal primer, run it mid to max till you get best group. Have kills (one shot) to 650 yards with a Sendero, and it cloverleafs at 100. I like 3000 to 3100 FPS but it is a custom action.
Ok guys all good information thanks

Congratulations on the hand me down Ruger 77 Boat Paddle!!!

These are actually highly sought after rifles!
Remember me if you ever decide to sell!!

If you are serious about shooting 500 yards, you should put on a Boyd's laminate stock, bed it, and freefloat the barrel. I have a 270 Boat Paddle for short range stuff, tuning is a chore.

Keep the barrel clean!

As mentioned, this model is a collector item. But if you want better accuracy change the STOCK but keep it. For whitetail 154or162SST or 140 to 160 NBT.
4831, 7828, Rl22, and N-560- 565.
Hope this helps.

If you are not shooting it much, buy ammo and don't bother reloading for it. If you are going to shoot a lot, get a different caliber. I started with a 7mag, bought 5 or 6 different bullets, several powders. By the time I had a load, and exausted all the other possibilities, the barrel was shot out.

If I had to choose one bullet to work an all around hunting load in the 7rem mag, I would start with the 160 grand slam. But if you are likely to shoot 5-10 rds sighting in at 100 yards, and one or two shots a year on deer. Buy a couple(3) boxes of Federal Fusion, should be fine for deer 200-250 yards. Which would be double the average deer HARVESTED distance.

My Rem 700 ,7 Mag kills deer out to 400 using a good scope and treestand rest. If you reload headspace off the shoulder, not the belt.

Ok guys thanks all goood information I don’t think my boat paddle is been shot much just went out west elk hunting just a few times.

Deer aren't that tough just about any thing out of a 7 mag is over kill at least. Think of how many have been killed with Remington Pointed Soft Points, not a really well built bullet by todays standards but still plenty of bullet for a deer.

It is better to have the right bullet for a 500 yd shot .
