223 barrel recommendation

I am thinking about putting a new barrel on my Tikka T3x heavy barrel varmint rifle. All my shooting is done bench rest at 300 yds. What chamber, twist, barrel thickness and barrel length is recommended ? I intend to shoot Berger 80.5 full bore bullets, unless you guys recommend a better bullet for my style of shooting.

Beware that the Tikka action is rounded off in front so if you want to keep that look the barrel diameter at the breach end is 1.150".

When I had the barrel replaced on my Tikka Varmint I think I went with the Rem Varmint contour and had to open up the barrel channel a little.

if your new barrel is 223 what twist and length barrel did you get
I would prefer a shouldered barrel

What chamber, twist
What elevation do you shoot at? Using sea level, the Berger stability twist rate calculator would say faster than an 8T. Minimum of 7.75T. I went with the 7T but I shoot at 5,000 feet elevation. I can shoot any Berger bullet.

223 for chamber, but what free bore?

My Tikka was a 22-250. I had Fisher T&C do the barrel work.

I recently had a 223 rebarreled and went with a 12" twist so I could shoot lighter bullets. I had it cut at 24".

I would suggest a pre-fit/nut barrel - and save some $$$ in gunsmithing - go for a 7.5 at 24in. Criterion etc. But do get some gauges to ensure proper head spacing. I have used a sized case full of epoxy in the past, when a gauge was not available - and that rifle shoots bugholes.

getting back to my original question, for shooting Berger 80.5 full bore bullets in 300 yd matches what twist, chamber and barrel length ?

for the price, be very hard to beat Urban's barrels!! They shoot too!

For years years I suggested Criterion barrels as we had excellent success with them. When it was time to replace, three of my friends could not get the new ones to perform for about a year now. This summer my bud bought a replacement from Urban in two weeks and it instantly shot well, using the same 80.5. Call him for the specs.

1. ISSF CHAMBER
2. 8TW - 7TW
3. .875 - 1.25" BARREL DIAMETER
4. 26" - 30" BARREL LENGTH
85 BERGER SHOOTS GOOD OUT OF THIS CHAMBER 7TW BARREL AND SO DOES THE 80.5 FULLBORE.
SHOULDERED OR NUT IS YOUR PREFERENCE.
