Added Micro Vertical adjustment to my Rigid Reamer holder.

So after doing another barrel yesterday. I got frustrated with the nut on the QCTP for my height adjustment.
I took an import boring head I had in the shop and turned it into a vertical height micro adjuster.
This rigid reaming gizmo is really coming together.
I also made an extension arm for holding my indicator. This allowed me to check the front and the back of the reamer for alignment.
To speed up the alignment process even more I am ordering another 1/10 indicator. One will ride on the pilot the other on the shank infront of the collet. This will prevent all the sweeping back and forth with the carriage.

Happy thanksgiving!

God Bless,
Dustin

Nice job on that! It's good to see guys get creative and build stuff thinking outside the box.
I wonder if all the extra overhang with the adapter and boring bar holder will give you any trouble. Since it seems like you have no problem making your own tools. I wonder if a guy could build a solid block that could be pinned and bolted onto the carriage in front of the cross slide to hold the rigid reamer holder. You could possibly get rid of the aluminum shank on the boring bar adapter and mount it directly onto the solid block. Maybe I'm looking at possible issue that won't exist but it would get rid of quite a few places that could have movement or would have to be locked down.

If the Haas had more x travel i would mount it permanently. But 8 inches of x travel does not leave much for that sort of thing. No matter the mount you still have to be able to adjust it in all directions.
The aluminum shank will probably be swapped out for a mt4 shank. Or a solid metal shank. Aluminum is all I had in the shop yesterday.
I also thought about cutting in a female dovetail so it mounts to the qctp. I still may… But I wanted to get more chambers done with it before going down that road. Zero run out on a 10th indicator on the first chamber with it yesterday.
God Bless,
Dustin

Could you please share more info and pictures on this setup? I'm very interested in your ingenuity
You are not alone. I have people messaging me wanting me to build them one.

When it's all together how will you make sure the boring head is into the qctp correctly? IE that your getting true vertical adjustment

Gordy Gritters uses something like this in his video: Chambering a Championship Match Barrel (1). He never says what it is but you see it a few times hooked to his tailstock. He's using a floating reamer holder so I don't know why he needs this. I grabbed a frame from the video here (I claim "fair use"):

There are many import tailstock alignment devices just like that one.

That’s a rigid gretan holder.

It's something like this he's cobbled together.

I started a thread about that when he posted that video. It wasn't well received around here... I still want to try it... if I can find an MT3 blank that doesn't turn out to actually be a slitting saw arbor.

The thread referenced above has a lot of updated information on building one. Your thread was with Bruce Thom and is referenced in the link.

Can't you just use a dead centre with the end cut off?
