Buckshot at Distance

I powder coat my buckshot because 31 cal. is not available in nickel plate. I have found that most nickel plate buckshot is not the roundest and if I do use other size i buy swaged. I have found that it patterns best with a wad cup and that some wad cups are better than others. I have hard cast my own but get the best patterns with the BPI 1 1/2 super buck that I powder coat. I reload buckshot for the predators around the farm.

One more thing: Keep in mind that buckshot does not have much energy past 60 yds. I pattern at 50 yds and all my shots are less than that. Another thing to remember is that ever. shot gun patterns different . You wont even get the same pattern out of the same gun with the same loads every time. I have done a lot of testing and I consistently get 5 to 8 pellets in a 10" circle and the rest in a 30" circle with my loads. This load works in most shot guns but none better than with my Kicks buckicker choke and 12 pellets of powder coated 31 cal. buckshot.. You may need to do a lot of testing to find your best load. Good luck PS 00 buck wont work in the shot cup wads

thanks 257 ack , some of the hulls you mention are hard to come by lately. so I am going with BPI 3" high brass.
BPI also has the Fio. and Cheddite 2 /3/4" hulls. They load the same. They also have wads that fit those hulls. I have found that the MG 42 with a 1/16" felt in the bottom works best. Some have good luck with BPI's steel wads. I have a lot of the 3"' and some 3 1/2" hulls. I have got equal, but none better than the 2 3/4 hull. I buy once fired ram STS and Win. AA hulls from precision reloading and Billy D's supply. I use them for every thing else. Its not the amount of shot in the hull that counts. Its the amount on target

Depends on just what you call buckshot.
Here it's 00 buck and each pellet is 1/8oz, ~55gr.
Fired at HV .22 rimfire velocities (1300fps) 00 buck will take the smaller pigs (60lb) at 60 yds with some pellets nearly passing completely through.

There is a lot of leeway in buckshot sizes thats why I list in caliber. A true 00 b is 33 cal and weighs around 55 gr like you say. I have cut open some factory shells and found that they measure closer to 30 cal. And I think that may be in specs. The 31 cal I load is about the same as factory 0 buck. I chose the 31 cal because it stacks well in wads and gives me the right crimp height, 60 yds might be the limit with large buckshot. Smaller buckshot will not give you good penetration

I recently posted this on other forms and well the "Trolls" exposed themselves. Should have started here. My question is do any of you have information on shooting 12ga buckshot at distance to a lethal pattern. I have ordered a Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical and building up reloading components. Shotgun is new to me and I will not be reloading birdshot only buckshot loads and looking for a good starting point. All information is welcome.
For safety sake, use only published loads until you have years of experience, Then be careful. 2 recomindations, Get the Lyman manual and watch the Bubba Roundtree vids on utube. He has every thing from reloading buckshot, to casting, to powder coating and a lot more. He sometimes ventures into uncharted water, but he has been doing it for ages and knows his limit

Yes, for many years I have been aware or different shot sizing based on country of manufacture.

I'll leave these links to demonstrate just how different shot size naming is.

There are many more that can be found......

A guy that I knew from high school was a primitive weapons season fanatic. And the weapon of choice around the local swamps was an Italian double side x side 12 gage. He worked endlessly trying to get better and better groups. Last time I talked to him I asked what he was loading and how good did it group? He said he never did get what he was looking for till he made a ring out of fishing leader wire and split his buckshot and crimped them to the leader wire equally spaced all around. He told that he stuffed it all in the gun and small groups were guaranteed. I told him he was crazy but he insisted that it worked.

I head about this and at the time thought it was a joke and then .....dang you bring it up here.......I pray technology has moved forward of this.
