Recommend a loupe or visor

I have decided that I would like to get something to help me see detail in the workshop. But I'm a little overwhelmed with the options. $$$ isn't infinite so cheapest way to done well enough type situation.
My vision isn't superb on its own if that matters no reading glass's yet but clarity isn't what li could be.

Donegon Optivisor. Available at Amazon. Is been around for along time . Dif options for magnification, additional loupe , focal length etc

Been using Optivisor for years. They work great. For most things I use the ones that focus at 18".
I think they even have a light that fits on the side of them.

I have something like the Optivisor. It is the handiest tool that I own. Do not fall into the more power is better thing for binocular viewing. When things get too close there can be problems. Mine puts things in sharp focus from about 8" to a foot from my cheek. I find that to be about right. The next thing that I am going to do is to stop by a local drug store and try out some of the reading glasses. I would think that with the right power that they would do the exact same thing, but I have not confirmed that yet.
 
I just go down to the dollar store and get a pair of 3x cheaters. They work great. Just don't get too far away from what your looking at or you'll get dizzy.

Thats one of the problems with over the counter glasses. Not often will you find someone who needs the same power in each eye, and both lenses have the same power. Using them for a prolonged period of time can cause eye strain, eye fatigue and headaches. They are specifically designed for age-related Presbyopia. Similar to wearing a pair of shoes that don't fit. You can walk in them, but after a short period of time, your feet won't feel well:eek:

I can use low power cheaters all day with no problem, I only put the big ones on when I need them for close up for a short time just as would any high magnification glass.
 
I use a 15X loupe for inspecting crowns and other tiny, critical things. Bausch & Lomb. Can't remember where I got it. MSC, Midway, Brownells, some place else ?? What's really funny is that my eye doc of 30+ years says that my right eye is a jeweler's loupe when I take my glasses off :). The left eye has a blind spot down the middle :(

The problem w/ those 'cheaters' is that no one (hardly ever) has 2 eyes the same that is why we use an optomerist to get the right lense for each eye.

It would be great if you could try several pairs and try to figure what each eye needs. Then buy two pairs and make one pair of 'prescription' glasses from the two pairs.
 
I just got the Carson Optical Pro. I have several Optivisors and they are good, but they are heavy and sooner or later the lens part just falls down in use. Some of them have the little bolts you can tighten, but not all of them. The Carson has a little led "moron" light right on the top. Comes in handy all the time. Comes with four separate lenses of different powers. Watch out though...there are several Chinese copies of this one. The original is not really expensive.
 
I've tried the higher power readers----4.0, 5.0 and 6.0----and they've helped.

The down sides of this are the short focus and terrible durability of the readers.

Someday I'll think about having some older steel frames converted to a higher powder.
