Roy, that exact thing has happened to me. What are you doing to prevent it from going overly black?

It actually a relatively easy process, I was fortunate enough to learn it about 20 years ago when the restoration shop had supposedly the first Philadelphia secretary ever built in this country around 1710, the curved prospect drawers were missing, they asked me to build them obviously it was an honor and fun, it sold for 1,100,000 with all restorations documented. I asked Steve how he matched the finish perfectly... anyway you dissolve pixy dust in unicorn piss apply with a wizards staff while clicking the heels of your ruby red slippers three times and saying there's no room for black!!!!!
Just in case I ever wanted to give that a try, which of those ingredients is the most difficult to source?

I will have to give it a try next time I'm finishing a crotch walnut stock.
I use aniline dye powders,water base and alcohol base, I will also show that a traditional looking finish can be done on stocks and still be extremely durable. I have never liked the auto clearcoat thing, it's to thick.

This is the last crotch walnut stock I finished(A homebuilt nerfgun for my 6 year old son).
This side looks ok, but the other side could be called a black mess.

So you are a dye guy...
Have you noticed with alcohol, that it can/may react with the natural sugars in the wood giving a different color than what was applied?
My BIL warned me of the possibility, so I've stuck to bottled water.
I guess it's time for me to FAFO. Lol

Roy getting beat like a drum, NEVER! I remember the first time I met Roy at the 2013 IBS score Nationals in Weikert, PA. I was sitting with Dean Breeden and Roy called Dean and told him how he was going to kick everyone's ass. So Dean asked if I would set him up which I was all for. There was about 10 guy's huddled around Roy bullshiting with each other on the firing line near some benches and I come waltzing up and I tapped Roy on the back of his shoulder and asked, "Are you Roy Hunter?" he said yes why? I said your my hero. Would you sign an autograph for me I asked? he said WHO THE FUK PUT YOU UP TO THIS was it Breeden? I said no, nobody put me up to this. Everyone was cracking up and you could tell that old Roy Boy was a little beside himself trying to figure out who set him up like this. OMG was that totally hilarious. Roy's good people. I always enjoyed his company whether at his house or going to lunch with him near where he lives.

Aniline die was developed I believe around 1940, it was developed for restoration, color matching abilities, it takes a lot of practice to become efficient with them.
They all have their uses, they weren't designed to be wiped on like stain but if that's what I'm doing I use alcohol base because it's the fastest that being said it doesn't act like water base, with each stroke of the rag it gets darker. I personally I only use water base when I need the color to go deep. No I've never had an issue with alcohol base except learning how to use it.

Are you willing to share a ballpark price for the dreamers out there? I understand that it will depend a lot on the wood used, etc.

Completed stock, pillar and glued or not starts at 3,000 I only have interest in doing exhibition grade stuff. I'm working with this new finish so far it looks tons better than auto clear, we'll see. My intentions are to elevate the quality of BR stocks to the highest level my life long old woodworking ass can!!,
If it ain't fun I ain't doing it...
