You Can't Be Serious.

Back in the 80s when I wore a badge and gun every day, we were required to qualify once a year. Like every department in America we had that one guy that made you cringe. Well one of the gun shops south of Houston had a sale. Buy a Colt Commander 45 and they would throw in a Dremel tool. Never did figure that combo out. Anyway. It was his turn to step to the line and do his thing.
Unknowing to any of us, he took that Dremel with a fine stone on it and "smoothed" the trigger up a little the night before. So he pulls the trigger and the show is on. For all of about 2 seconds. Darn thing went full auto. He pretty much lost all control with it rising and coming over where we were all standing. Hell we were diving for cover when it finally locked open. My chief at that time was actually 6'9" tall. He bout hurt himself diving behind a patrol car. He walks over and looks down at idiot and without saying a word stuck his hand out. After gaining possession of said firearm, he told idiot he would see him 8 Monday morning.
Wasn't funny at the time, but we were in tears later at the station sharing the story with any one that would listen.
And Chief made idiot send pistol in and get put back to factory condition.

Only one?

When I taught it seemed like a near majority on the line on some days were certified idiots.

Never realized there was a cutoff date for stupidity.
But.... As a fellow Utah resident it does not fix stupid. It does reduce it somewhat but they still exist and they still pull off some amazing stuff. As range safety officer at the local range we have asked several to remove themselves from the property I do avoid the range for the week before the deer hunt that is the worst

I am friends with two different guys who were both shot in spring gobbler season in PA. One in the Erie area and the other in the Butler area.
Both were walking and wearing an orange safety vest. Both still have lifelong scars and issues with BB’s still in their bodies. One lost his right eye and had to relearn to shoot everything.

I myself had my share of guys stalk up on me while calling. Not to hard to see the stupid in guys while bird hunting. I haven’t spring bird hunted in many year due to the issues. Only fall turkey I do now is if a group passes by while in archery hunting.
A 2 blade rage dose make a pretty good mess of a bird though.

The years have gone by and the idiots have expanded. It use to be rare you seen stupid shot on the range decades ago. But today it's an every range trip experiance.

But just a couple years ago I ran into an older guy that showed up at the club with a beautiful Browning take down 22lr auto. We said hello and done are own thing. But after watching him it was obvious he was winging it with the like new gun

So I finally walk down to the bench he was on and asked if I could help. He said something was wrong he couldn't thread the feed tube back into its receiver. I had been watching and new the problem before I walked down. He wasn't giving it a push in quarter turn, he was trying to find threads to screw into.

It was pretty aperent from his response whe I showed him the pin on the rod and pointed out the slot in the receiver he had no experience with this type of feed system. But what happened next was obvious he had no idea of anything to do with firearms or safety.

After about 2 or 3 shots he left the bench with bolt closed, I believe safety off, and set it behind the firing line in a rifle perch for cold guns. So knowing he put more than a couple shell in it, I asked if it was empty. He said no, it's got more shells in it.

So ixplained in polite manner, your gun is still hot, and you have to empty it on open the bolt to place it behind the line in a holder.

So he explained he didn't shoot much, but this was a gun his brother owned, and had just

passed and his sister in law gave it to him as his brothers wishes w were for him to have it. Then took it to the bench and pulled the rod from the magazine tube and started dumping them out, as another guy came on the line and we converted.

It was only a minute or two and I look over and he is pointing it in the direction of the new guy shouldering the rifle looking thru the scope swinging it from side to side each side of the guy that had just walked up like it were a shotgun swing shooting?

The guy looking at him and not saying anything but no longer looking at me is what made me look to the side and seen this.i immediately got a little loud and put thing pointed down range and started towards him.

I was not polite but loudly gave him a few points on rules and safe handling of any weapon, and dam sure wasn't waving it around pointing it at anything especially people he didn't intend to use it on!

Now the KILLER, with bolt closed I asked if he unloaded it? When he said yes I ask him to point it down range and pull the trigger,,, BANG! Then I told him to do it again,,,,BANG! So at this point I walked down and told him to keep pulling the trigger till it no longer fired, 4 more shots were still in it, he had only emptied about half the tube.

The new guy just watched and listened, as I informed the guy at his age there was no excuse for what he did, and that I worried about him owning a gun in his own home for his family members, and hoped he understood that this was the most dangerous situation I had witnessed in decades!

After opening the bolt and verifying it was empty and cold. I told him he needed a course in safe firearms handling and he walked away.

Now the next KILLER, the new guy that had walked up, younger guy, who was the one in the line of the idiots barrel never said a word the whole time. Then when the guy was gone and I referenced a lot of the dumb chit I see their, he introduced as the newly voted in PRESIDENT OF THE CLUB???? So I let him know as a club official he suffered severely not stepping in and taking his roll as an officer involved in such a situation.

That was when I shook my head and left, I am no longer a member at that club!!!

About 2 years ago I had a smith 649 38 special I wanted to convert to 32 h&r mag so I brought it to a local gunsmith. I had the barrel and cylinder from a smith 631 so the smith could do the conversion. One morning I get a voicemail from the smith saying he had an accident and is on the way to the hospital. He ended up shooting him self dead center of his hand. In the message he said he was on the way to the hospital and that he wouldn’t have my gun ready that day. The following day he called me back and said my gun was done. He ran 100 mile races and his pain tolerance was unbelievable. The 32 cal lead bullet missed everything. The dr said it was a miracle. Really nice guy and has plenty of talent but made one mistake. He was checking the gap for the case head the day before and picked it up that morning and forgot he left a loaded round it in and shot his hand. He had a camera in his shop and played the video for me to watch it happen. His dog was laying down and the bullet missed it by less than a foot a went into the wall. Just be safe and check every gun.

I was at the public range at Whitehorse zeroing and testing loads at 100 yards. Along with my wife there was an older gentleman on the far right side of the range shooting some manner of semi automatic pistol. I don’t know if he was hitting anything but he sure wasn’t concerned with ammo scarcity as he was sending them down range.

I get to a point where I need to go to my target at 100 yards. I yell over at the guy and tell him I am going to 100. I get down and do what I needed with my target and I am starting the walk back to the firing line. I make it to about the 75 yard mark and Mr. speed shooter starts a mag dump that would make a Hollywood producer smile. I hit the deck and my wife starts running towards the moron yelling cease fire!! He stammers something about thinking I was back to the firing line. My wife is not shy about saying what is on her mind. She is chewing the guys ass out and he is starting to get loud with her. I get their and squash that. You arent getting loud with my wife when you are the stupid one here.

I tell him he needs to pack his stuff up and leave. He tells me I donr have that authority. So I tell him I will be right back with someone who does. The range watcher comes up and tells him to leave and not return.

Its one thing to make a stupid mistake. Its another to show no remote and not admit it and learn from it.

The only public ranges I felt 100% safe was Arizona; clean, well designed and immaculate condition with great supervision. There was a four dollar fee for admission. It was a hell of a deal.

Whitehorse is free unless you want to shoot longer ranges. Always a range watcher. In all of the years I have been there that is the only real issue I have had. Its a wonderful facility.

local gun store had a .22 revolver setting on the counter for a couple of weeks with the cylinder locked up. I don't know how many people played with it but I'm sure it was a bunch. Couple weeks later I found out they were closing and convinced the owner to sell it to me. while he was writing it up I picked it up pointed it up and wiggled the cylinder a little and it started to rotate so I opened the loading gate and 4 live rounds fell out.

Only 4?:D

I feel lucky to shoot at home on my range away from this nonsense.

Sometimes people have the best intentions but come up short and need more guidance than others. When my kid was an 8th grader, he took a two day hunter ed class taught by a well respected and knowledgable local that owned a gun shop and range. On day 2, I took my kid to the range to evaluate what he and others had learned, and watch him shoot. They had several test stations set up, one was crossing a fence with firearm, one was scat identification, blood tracking, and others. The instructor asked if I would man the station where they had a rifle with no bolt chambered in 308 Win, and there was a 300 Blackout cartridge case beside it. A grown man was there with two teenage sons all three taking the course. I visited with him and found out the kids asked him to take them hunting. He said he had no experience, and the last time he shot a gun was when he was discharged from the Army. He researched and found this hunter ed course and decided it was best to get some sort of guidance before trying to buy a gun and hunt. So the purpose of the station I was helping with was to make sure the ammo was right for the gun. I asked one of his kids if it would work and he replied no sir, the rifle does not match the head stamp. The dad said it would work, both were 30 cal. They argued for a few seconds before I explained it to the dad. It took me a few different ways to get it across to him why it was wrong, he just didnt get it, but his intentions were good. I mentioned this to the instructor, and he also had a chat and show and tell session with the guy.

At first I thought the guy was an idiot, and he probably is ignorant, but I bet our IT guys at work think the same thing about me when I ask computer questions. There is however a difference, a computer will probably not kill you.

We've all had experiences over the years with new gun owners that show up at camp with a new rifle that he's never shot, only been bore sighted, or the ones who want to shoot at 1000 yards because the shop owner told him that the new latest and greatest rifle he had to buy could shoot that distance right out of the box. What's your story of "You can't be serious" that you've experienced at camp or at the rifle range?
I belong to a private range, 90% of the time when I go there is no one there.
During deer season shoot in periods, I DO NOT go to the range.
Every year I am amazed at the end of hunting season how few shooting accidents there have been. I can't figure it out, how can so many go into the field with no accidents?

Does anyone remember the Cop firearms instructor that bragged through out the course that he was one of the very few people qualified to teach the course?
He then proceeded to shoot himself in the thigh!
So much for instructors!
