6BR for Long PD --What Bullet?

So I scored a Savage LRPV in 6 BR yesterday--for target fun and I hope as a longer range PD rifle--It is 8 twist so what is the preferred bullet for PD's? 75 Vmax or 87 Vmax?? Looks like the BC is much better on the 87-- My 223 with 53g Vmax hammers hard out to 450-500 so I am looking at using the BR for longer
I have a Lot of Varget and N133 but willing to try others --this is my first 6BR I am not looking to reinvent the wheel rather I am looking for a common proven combo to start with

I run some old bulk 80 grain bullets of unknown maker in mine.
You will have to try real hard to make the 6BR not shoot. Mine is not picky about much of anything.

Hey Feller, what this guy says is right! Just find a 70 through 80gr bullet that you can get plenty of and buy a box of 100, cheaper the better. If you can get them to shoot in your rig, great, if not pick another one and try it. When you find one that works buy enough for a couple of seasons and quit reading about it and go do it before you get too old.... John

Try a Berger 88 grain varmint with 31 gr of Varget, you can go higher, but better to start low and ease up. I run up to 32.5 in a krieger barrel, I do not have a Savage. I jam them about .007 into the lands.
I could never get the Hornady 87 gr to group well.

The classic load for a 6BR is a 105 gr Berger with 30 gr of Varget.

75&87 vmax are great on prairie dogs and reasonably priced. The longer distance you plan to shoot it the heavier the bullet I would go to help with the wind.
I’m running 2 BR’s and have 87gr vmax in one and some 105amax in the other for as long as I can keep finding some. Using Varget in both. I had a 12twist and ran 70NBT and 75vmax in that with good results.

I’ve been very happy with the 87 vmax on long range dogs. Also using 8t barrel. They fly pretty good. Varget, cci450. You will likely find a very good load between 3050-3150 fps.

87 V Max from 6XC 8T still blows PDs up at 800-900 yds......no pencil holes.

I ran 105g amaxes in my Savage Lrpv 6BR 8 twist (rechambered to 6BRX) till I ran out. I'm shooting 108 ELDs now. Both exspand well on PDs. Varget, RL~15 or 15.5 and CCI 450s worked very well for me.. When the wind comes up you will like the heavier bullets.

2 years ago I shot my longest with my 6br and 105 Amax's. This year I shot them farther than that with my .223 and 53vmax. Going to build a load for the 6br with the 87vmax's. If they work out for me I'll be shooting this combo next year for the longer ones.

Seems like one would want to use the heavier ballistically superior bullets when shooting varmints at long range to make the make the most consistent hits ? It is not a hide damage or run away issue with ground rats.

The twist is for heavy bullets. Bullets cost a lot to try even 5 different kinds. A lot of guys say the heavy bullets won't blow up a PD. I don't care about gory blowups. A hole thru them kills.

I shot the heck out of Sierra 85gr bthp in my 8t 6br! ( not that you will find those anymore)

Yup and for Me, the 95 grain, Classic Hunter Berger, is very accurate, in My 24" 1-7.5 Twist Criterion Barrel and,..
Cuts them,.. in Half,.. aka,.. Plenty, Dead !
The 87 gr. V-Maxes, didn't Group as well,.. SADLY,..
Probably due to Bullet Stability at, My,.. Speed / barrel Twist
80 gr FB Berger Varmints, shoot extremely well, also, just NOT,.. as Far !

I'm not saying it's the best since I didn't try everything but for several years I hunted groundhogs with a Savage in 6BR. It started out as a 22-250 and I replaced the barrel with a Pac-Nor 10 twist in 6BR, Sav-2 trigger, and a Boyd's varmint thumb-hole stock. 87 V-Max in Lapua brass, CCI-450's and 31 grains of Varget ran right at 3050. It was very, very accurate. I never shot anything over 725 yards because then you want to know "exactly" how far it was and that means walking to the dead critter and shooting the rangefinder back at the truck and I'm too lazy to do that. Things ain't exactly flat in central PA.

It's the last varmint load listed on this site under the 6mmBR cartridge guide from many moons ago. The link to the target pics doesn't work anymore and I can't find them so I'll add different one from about 10 years ago. This was a 350 yard shot, same equipment, no exit hole. The lovely young lady just did her "50 at 50" - 50 pushups on her fiftieth birthday so yay for her. I had trouble with 21 at 21.

I would LOVE to see a load work up with a new box of 87 Vmax. They shot like crap for me. At least compared to the Sierra 85 BTHP. The 87 would shoot about 1 moa, I have no idea why. All of the other new production Hornady bullets that I've shot shoot amazingly well. But that 87 was very disappointing.

87 VMax shot from a retired 1000 yard BR barrel. Used H380 just because I had an 8 pounder. Slayed a few PDs at 800-900 with this setup.

87 VMAX and 29.7 grains Varget , Norma 6 BR brass and 450 primer , .015 out from hard jam shoots amazing in my 8 twist barrel
That brass prefers not being pushed to a higher accuracy node
