Remington 700 Alpha 1 action/rifle

The biggest “problem” with the 700 was never the actions. It was always the sewer pipe barrels they screwed onto them. These new ones better have a match grade barrel on them to even consider that kind of a price point.

Remington has burned me one too many times. I’m done with any of their products regardless of who the capitol investment owner of the day is.

Cost Delta estimate.... probably being generous in places and may be off in others....(mass production in mind, not custom gunsmithing)

1. It’s built with a higher quality steel matched in the barrels and action. $40

2. Tolerances have been tightened such that the actions are essentially “blueprinted” for accuracy right out of the box. $20 (blue printing doesn't necessarily just mean tighter tolerances)

3. Barrels are fluted and rifled 5R. This means the five grooves and lands are slightly radiused on the edges to reduce bullet scouring and groove fouling. Should be more accurate and easier to clean. Some claim a better gas seal, too. $60

4. Muzzles are threaded and 11-degree target crowned. $40

5. Twist rates are increased for most calibers and twist is marked on the barrel! Great idea. $0

6. Ejection port is larger and magazine boxes longer. (3.924” and 2.975”) $25

7. Diamond fluted bolt body machined from one billet back to the cocking/extraction cam. Handle dovetailed and brazed on, knob screwed on and interchangeable. $60

8. Extractor hook in locking lug, internal coil spring activated, field replaceable. $20

9. Simple twist and pull of cocking shroud to remove firing pin from bolt. $30

10. Two gas escape vents in front receiver ring. $2

11. Flat Timney Extreme Hunter trigger at #3. $40

12. Oberndorf bottom metal in aluminum or steel. $40

$375 cost delta
+Mark up .... still not getting me to $1800 for a R700

I could be way off, but still wouldn't go this route given today's options. Remington should have done this 15 years ago
