POI Shift Head Scratcher

I would just get another barrel. If it shoots, problem solved. If it doesn't -still an issue to find and you have a spare barrel.

Ask me how I know.

I now have a rifle that shoots, a spare barrel and a chassis waiting for a R700 pattern rimfire to turn up to build a varmint rifle.

This is probably what the end result will be lol.

Update:
So I took the barrel off, cleaned everything, and then re-installed. Unfortunately the same results were shown with the POI drifting down. Here is the pic of today’s target. The first one is the Shilen 6 Dasher and the second is another rifle I used to rotate with and let barrel cool. The second rifle also shows that it was not the conditions, there was not vertical shifting in the second rifles POI.

Here is a good one. I have a Shilen 6 dasher 26” .800 muzzle barrel that I screwed onto a savage action. It shoots tight but POI seems to shift down as session goes. Ended up about 1.5 moa lower last range session of 25 rounds. Even after barrel cools for 20 minutes the POI is still low. The next range trip POI starts back normal and after a few 5 shot groups it starts working down again. I shoot groups slow and let barrel cool between but seems to “flex” into a new “place” as session goes on. Groups stay tight as well. So far I have had 3 range trips with it (about 80 rounds total) and happens each trip.

I swapped stocks and glass again, same issue persist. Target pic of last trip below. I also attached the chrono results, it is not from velocity change, and you can see the 20 minutes between groups to let barrel cool some.

Thoughts? Just a lemon barrel? I have had barrels change POI some and groups have open up when some barrels get hot, but this POi continues to get lower as a session goes but groups stay tight.
Update!!!!

So, after some back-and-forth Shilen did send me a new barrel. Finally had a chance to mount it up and go start some break in. It looks like this one will be just fine and probably be a good shooter as well. The point of impact was very consistent even over a .030 range of seating depth. Next 50 rounds of break in will be playing with powder charge.

They said there was an anomaly inside the barrel about an inch in past the chamber. He said it did not look like any type of machining marks but that they did not want a barrel like that out there with their name on it.

Me too… did Shilen identify possible causes for the POI shift?

Great CS and now I have what looks to be a good shooting button barrel.

Well Shilen gets a gold star, interesting thread, glad you got it resolved. That would drive me nuts.

Their CS was top notch. They emailed and called to go over all possibilities and their findings after they conducted a look at the barrel.

It doesn’t always work out this way, I am stoked!
It’s good to hear new ownership has upped their cs response. When I had a serious barrel issue, prior management encouraged me to go elsewhere - and I’m happy to see current management doing better.

In all fairness, steel isn’t perfect and there can be hard spots and defects in all barrels.

(edited to have a more positive tone)

Great to hear they made things right!
Yeah, me too! They could have easily have told me to go kick rocks and blamed it on shooter error, or something like that. I did try everything they asked of me before I sent it back though, and nothing seem to make any differences so I think that is what led them to having me send it in.
