Target bullet for 6BR

First and foremost I am a groundhog and occasional crow hunter, but I would like to try a target type bullet that I will be using strictly for paper targets. The 58gr. V-Max that I currently shoot does a more than fair job on targets, but I would like to experiment with a target type bullet just for the fun of trying something different.

The barrel I have is a Hart HV with a 12 twist and 60 thousands free bore.

The powders I have are H322, N133 and Varget.

I would also like to try a bullet that is somewhat readily available.

I plan on shooting mostly from 100yds. to 300yds. and possibly further. Please let me know what you think might be a good bullet to try in my rifle at these distances.

One of my favorite varmint loads -

CASE: Norma 6mm Bench Rest

PRIMER: Remington 7 1/2

POWER: H-322 / 30.2 gr.

BULLET: Sierra 75 gr. Hollow Point

I am shooting this out of a Lilja 3 groove 1-13" twist barrel.

On a good day, this load shoots .100 or less @ 100 yards and crow killing accuracy out to 400 yards with ease! The only thing that will limit shooting distance is the wind.

Not much free bore for long bullets.kind of limets your options. Tommy Mc
 
I spoke with Randy Robinett at Bib bullets yesterday. Randy is a real good guy, and he took the time to discuss at length with me which bullet he felt would be the best to shoot out of my rifle. He recommended his 67gr. FB. and had 350 of those in stock so I will be buying them.

I am really looking forward to working up a load for these bullets and have high hopes they will shoot well.

Try the Sierra 60 gr Varminter bullet. Unbelievabe accuracy. I got better fps with H322 and 8208. Never bought Vit or Norma powder because of the price. I standardized on 8208 for all my loads. Decent accuracy with Varget and RE-15 but 100-150 fps slower.

My rifle did not shoot the 60gr. Sierra varminter or H322 that well. It liked the 58gr. V-Max with either Varget or N133.

Randy is one of many on here that will share knowledge, and speaks the truth.

300 is about enough to figure out you ain’t got enough.

The powders listed will all work with varget being the least desirable for the lighter bullets in a 6br. But again, it too will work and some use all three. The h322 and 133 are a tad on the fast side and varget a tad on the slow end. N135 was designed for what you're asking about and is a good choice, one of, if not the best in many guns.

Play with what you have and you may be pleasantly surprised, though. I've shot quite a bit of h322 with 68s. Start at around 30.0gr and ease your way up. You'll probably find something below 31.0 with it. It's a little faster than n133.

This was what I was going to recommend. A good 65 to 68 grain flat base should be best with your free bore, BT would be hard to find the rifleings with .060 free bore.

0 freebore would be better for anything lighter and vlds would be even worse. You'll be very happy with Randy's bullets, great choice!

Yes, I've got an old ptg 6br reamer with .098 freebore that has cut a lot of winning chambers. It's always been a good reamer and still is. But with that .098fb, there are a few boat tails that are just barely in the neck or not at all. A.060 isn't gaining a hell of a lot but it is gaining that .032" and that's significant. But the .098 in a 6br works just fine with most any 65-68 fb and a few bt's. It also will work all the way up the the heavies, like 105-107ish. Makes it very versatile with that long BR neck. But yes, a little less freebore would be nice if dedicated to lighter bullets only. Two reamers, a zero and a 110 would cover virtually any thing in 6mm with that long br neck. A throater works too, though and is cheaper than another reamer, fwiw. If I could only have one, it'd be a zero and just throat everything that needs more I guess.
