TallDog?????? Help identifying this rascal

Clay, do you have dies or have you tried forming one? I’m pretty interested in this but not sure how easy it would be to push the shoulder down that far on a 6BR case. Seems like it could be tricky to anneal far enough down the body and I’d hesitate to try it without but maybe the concern is misplaced.

I owned one way back. On his recommendation, George Kelbly built it for me on a Teddy action when 220 Russian bras had dried up. It was .100” shorter than the parent 7BR case. I had a set of Neil Jones form dies. It took multiple bushings to push the shoulder back. Five or six of them. The cases looked absolutely terrible until they were fire formed. It was a real pain to form them but that rifle had no problems competing with all the PPC’s on the line running surplus H322 or Thunderbird T32 and Walt Bergers hand made 68 FB bullets. That was back when you called and talked to either Walt or Eunice, whichever one wasn’t pulling a handle! Man, I’m getting old.

I can’t find the dies or I would give them to the OP. I will take another look though.

Dave.

I have not formed one yet.

I make waldog brass all the time and it is not an issue at all.

I suspect this will be much the same, but the plans never survive the first shot either. Time will tell.

Thanks George, that helps.

I think this one is closer to .150” short?

CW

Edit
It is a .125" sort according to the barrel

Clay, do you know the capacity of that case? I’ve been toying with the idea of a 22BR, .140 short to shoot 90gn SMK at ~2860fps. I think that can be done with ~25gns of Varget based on what FTR guys do with 223 and what my 22BR does. I think a .140 short BR case would land at just about 31gns of capacity compared to the 30gns of a 223.

That is RL-15, I sold all my VarGet to a friend a couple of years ago.

That’s awesome, thank you! It looks like my math was reasonably close if your dinky dog is a .125 short BR, a .140 short would likely chop a couple grains off that.

EDIT: I calculated needing to push the shoulder to .930” and then I put a 40deg shoulder and expanded the diameter there out to .463 like a lot of Dashers. I’m getting more serious about trying this out. All my 22BR barrels have given me way more speed and capacity than I needed to reach nice nodes and I’ve always wanted something smaller without going to a PPC or 378 bolt face

I sent a note to Jasmine at JGS yesterday and asked her to look for the reamer print for this. I haven't heard back yet. In the Benchrest Shooting Primer, there is an article about a fellow who shot a "little dog" in 22 cal. It was a BR case shortened like a Waldog....... so it would have a bigger fuel tank that a Waldog. I can run a little over 25gr of 133 in my Waldog with 52gr bullets in the fall and winter leagues.

Edit, I think this is about .120-.125" short?

Ok,
I just got off the phone with Harry Rowold, his Dinkey Dog is a .100" short PPC in 6mm. Like a WalDog but 6mm. Harry shoots 58gr bullets with this rig.

I do not know what the name of this short BR is but by golly, I have one! I suppose it is a really short TallDog?

@Evan , I called Jim Carstensen (SP) and asked him about his short BR cartridge. He shoots a short BR in .22 cal and it is a Small Dog. It is a .200" short BR.

I like to see people try new things and re-visit old things. I hope that doesn't hurt anyone's feelings to say here. Seems in the world we now live, if it's not the status quo, it upsets some people. Lol!

Clay, it's probably a PITA to form but I hope you play with your Dinkey! It goes without saying, but I hope it has a happy ending, too. :D:cool:;)

What I plan to gin up is a very short dasher..... a mighty little "Dasher hound"
40* Shoulder, .120' ish short, with a full BR backend .4714" ish, .272-.274 neck.
It will be fun.

Haha! We’re on the same wavelength. I’m just really interested in what the 22 can bring to the table in LR because the 90gn SMK has shot more sub inch groups at 600 yards in practice for me than anything I’ve tried before. I’m looking at coming over to shoot with you guys for the state match at the end of September.
