Weatherby 307 - anyone tried one yet?

I’ve read some about this gun/action. Kinda interesting. Eyeballed one at a sporting goods store and it looked pretty good.

The thing is, the 307 is exactly that, a clone. Weatherby was always noted for having a bolt action with 6 or 9 lugs...I'm not sure if 2 is better or worse....but because Rem has 2 lugs that seems common now. Must be the VHS/Beta story rehashed...One thing interesting is that Weatherby sells the action by itself (for the 307 2 lug only).

They're also using common cartridges as well, almost seems the son is trying to revamp the name. Weatherby has always been associated with quality hunting rifles. The 307 is reasonably priced. The action is only $750 by itself.

From their website

With a similar footprint to the popular Remington® 700® platform, Model 307 is compatible with most aftermarket 700 accessories, including triggers, stocks, and bottom metals. This gives the builder unlimited ability to build a truly custom rifle.

The bolt release button was designed to sit high on the receiver to make sure it fits Rem 700 aftermarket stocks and chassis.

The action is tapped and ready for scope mounts or a picatinny rail, it is threaded for 8-40 screws and is compatible with Stiller/Savage® mounts.

Looks like it sports a pinned recoil lug and Mini 16 type extractor

The gaudy Liberace style guns chambered in smoking fast belted cartridges brought Weatherby to the dance and I’ll bet many folks here secretly want one (color me guilty). That said, Roy’s grandson is doing a great job of expanding the brand’s identity. The decidedly “non-Weatherby” design of the 6.5 RPM cartridge is a perfect example. As long as Weatherby doesn’t turn it’s back on their core customer base I see the unconventional product additions as a total plus.

Roy Weatherby’s entire business model was built on SPEED.

Just as Short Range Bench Rest Shooters sacrifice just about all other aspects of ballistic performance in the quest for “agging capability”, Weatherby built Rifles with one thing in mind. To be the fastest.

And they are beautiful. They are strong. Everybody knows what the name Weatherby stands for.

But, in todays market, (who DOESN’T make a Remington clone?), you have to go with the crowd.

6.5 RPM and 6.5 PRC are nothing alike.
( SAAMI (or) CIP specs )
===============================

6.5 PRC --- 6.5 RPM

2.030" brass length --- 2.570" brass length
2.955" COAL --- 3.340" COAL
.532" rim --- .473" rebated rim
.532" wide at the .200" line --- .500" wide at the .200" line
.517" wide below shoulder --- .478" wide below the shoulder
30* shoulder angle --- 32.25* shoulder angle
.272" neck length
--- .283" neck length
72.3 gr H20 case capacity --- 82.5 gr H20 case capacity

If I messed up some of the numbers, please someone correct me.

Seems that 6.5 RPM is their big push now, was unclear to me if that was somehow related to PRC, but evidently not. Thanks for answering that.

That's the whore reason for joining this forum. Nobody knows everything. But together we find out more than we could ever know on our own.
;)
The saying " It takes a Village to raise a child " has a very deep meaning.
We were all children at one point and our immediate environments and relationships can make all the difference to the outcome of our whole life.
However, just like everything in life... There are exceptions to every rule.

I wish they would have done it in 3 lug rather than the two. I will still try one more than likely so I have one with Sheridan Wy on it.

When I lived in Montana and when I hunted, I fixed and sold enough used cars to buy a new 257 Weatherby ( which I still have)
Fabulous. Two things. I don’t believe there’s a flatter shooting cartridge. ( times change but I’ll throw that out anyway.
Second, Weatherby's I’ve had were/are capable somehow of putting the first shot through a cold clean barrel dead on.
BTW Roy was called Ed by people who knew him.

What's it made out of? Does that matter? Is there any reason why a Bat action would be more accurate? Is a squared-up bolt about the center line of the bore equal accuracy potential?
