Best bullet wt. for a 260 Rem

2900+ with 140s in a 260 is perfect IMO. H4831sc or H4350 are the two best options IMO also. Personally the 139 Lapua Scenar's shot the best in mine. The AI version is the next step in performance within 90 fps of the 6.5-284. Better brass life as well.

I have the 260AI in a bench rifle and a hunter. Both have 1 - 8 Twist barrels. As you stated both H-4831 & H-4350 works well with the heavier weight class bullets. My pet and best accuracy load is the Berger 140 gr. VLD Long Range Target on top of 44.5 gr. of H-4350.

I own five 260s, including the pre 260 Rem, the 6.5x08. Funny how that works, looks the same, uses the same load and the 6.5x08 pre dates the 260, just did not get SAMMI board approval, where Rem rep was chairman.

I will pass the information on that an agent from the hill gave me, years ago. He was shooting a 6.5x08, socially.
You fully prep your brass, fire form, sort by water capacity, neck size.
You seat the 120 SMK .003 off. Use Fed 210m primers, Use a medium load with H-414, increase by 1/2 gr until it shoots one hole, which it will do. Should be around 3,200. That puts the 120 SMK supersonic past 1,200 yards.

You will find it shoots 85 Sierra JHPs with the flat base 1/8" in the case. Runs at around 3,500.

I do a wet bore break in with Sweet Shooter.

when I first started with the 260 Jim, Donny and I built 5 260s between us and I never considered anything but a 140 in the bolt action rifles we put together. But a later got an AR10 and loaded some 140s for it and they beat up brass even if I lowered the charge weight. My friend in Tennessee told me to read up on AR 10s at JP rifles. He recommended 120 or 130 weight bullets in the AR10s in 260 and i got some 123 Nosler custom competition and 130 Bergers. They worked a lot better.

Did you read what I and rw3 wrote about H-414?? It was very accurate in my rifle but damn it will carbon foul a barrel so bad that it will ruin it. So, beware!!! I will never use it again in anything.....

I think the best thing to do with any rifle is figure out what your using the rifle for and pick a bullet accordingly. The 130 and 140 bullets aren't that much different from each other. 10 grains will basically gain velocity and lose BC. It's pretty much a wash performance wise on game. If you want a flatter trajectory out to 500 yards, the 130 is probably optimal. Behind that, the 140 will catch up. Ultimately shoot what the rifle likes best. Case capacity will suffer using a 140 in an AR platform. The 120-130 will be a better option. I used bolt guns for my 260 reloads and I could get optimal case capacity with a long action rifle. Lots of variables so depending on what your shooting can dictate what may be the best option.

My daughters .260 Rem has a 1-8 twist but we've never shot anything but 120's in her rifle and they shoot great with H4350. She started out with Nosler 120gr BT's and they were very good, but they became extinct and we couldn't get our hands on any. Next up was the Sierra 120gr Pro Hunters and they were even better in both accuracy and performance on game and that's what she's been using ever since. When we saw how good they shot and performed i purchased 10 boxes and I'm glad I did because shortly after those seemed to disappear as well. I know several in the area that shoot a 260 and they highly recommend the Hornady 129gr SP Interloc bullet as their bullet of choice in that caliber especially for hunting. Mike

Me and a friend of mine tried the Nosler 120 gr. B T and the 100 gr. B T as well and both shot lights out in our 260AIs.

Fooled with a couple of bullets all were plenty good. 100 gr, Nosler Partition, 120 gr. Ballistic Tips, 120 gr. Sierras, 140 grain Gamekings were my favorite but have a hard time finding them anymore.

I screwed together a LH 260 for deer and the occasional coyote a couple years ago and used a 1-9 twist Shilen barrel to shoot lighter bullets. It shoots Sierra 120 Pro Hunters very well with 4064 or H4350, Varget was plenty good for deer.

I have other rifles for heavier bullets.

I'm also new to reloading. My .260 has a 1 in 10 barrel twist. Tried some nosler accubond lr 142 gr. Gun doesn't like them. Can any one tell me what I should reload for the 1in10 twist. Shoots 140 gr factory corloks awsome
My daughter had a rem model 7 .260 that had a 1-10 twist and it shot the 120's very well with IMR 4320 which we found to be a diamond in the rough in the .260. I've also had equal results in other .260's with 4320, it's a shame they stopped making it.

She now has a Rem 700 SPS and it has a 1-8 twist and it also shoots the 120's very well with H4350.

Another couple really good powders we found for the .260 and 120's while doing load development were IMR 4895 and 4064, both produced good groups. Of all the powders I've worked with H4350 seemed to be the most accurate and consistent in her 700 so that's what we use the most. Sometimes you just have to play around with powders because every rifle has its favorite flavor :) Mike
