M 700 magazine questions

I have a rem 700 varmint rifle with a factory laminate stock that has a factory 22-250 barrel that might need to be replaced in the not to distant future. Not sure if i want another 22-250 or if im better off with something different, and not sure what cartridges will cycle and if there are any differences in mag well openings or mags, followers, springs ect. Will the 7-08, 308 ect work withbthe same mag parts? It has adl bottom metal.
Also will a 6br cycle without modification? I have heard of some issues but never from someone first hand.
I dont hunt many varmints these days and would like something somewhat low recoil and accurate with good barrel life for shooting paper and maybe a deer.
I have been throwing around 6.5x47l, 7-08, or maybe a 6br or a variation.

Just my 2 cents, the 22-250 fits that bill really well. I've taken a lot of deer with my 22-250 and 223. So as long as 22-250 is legal for deer in your state.

Other than that the 243 would be hard to beat and would feed really well from that mag set up.

Since hunting is still on your agenda, the 243 would be my choice but I am somewhat bias since I've been shooting this excellent cartridge since the late 60"s. It is truly a dual-purpose cartridge, i.e., varmint/predators and deer. The recoil is low and with tailored reloads, 1/2 moa is doable with a high-quality rifle and properly bedded stock.

The 243 get a bad rap on barrel life but I had well over 3 thousand rounds in my old Rem 700 and it still held a 1 to 1 1/4 at 100 yards with tailored reloads which is more than enough accuracy for deer.

I've also shot a lot of "paper" with mine and you can significantly extent the barrel life by limiting sustained fire sequences and avoid overheating the barrel. However, if you are a "blaster" this is not the best option, but neither is any other overbore cartridge.

For pure recreational target shooting, nothing quite beats the 223 Rem in my opinion, low recoil, excellent accuracy, economical, and long barrel life suited for target shooting. A Tikka 223 would be a very good choice especially the heavy varmint model for target shooting. Mine is a literal "tack driver."

Your short action mag, spring and follower will work for anything in the 308 size cartridge. I don't know if Remington made a shorter set up for the BR, I have never seen a factory set up. What you have should work for the BR as well.

In my experience the 6BR will not feed reliably. I have had success with positioning one spare round as far forward in the magazine as possible. That back up round got me a deer a couple of years ago when I overestimated the range and the first shot went over his back. It is no great trick to get 2800 to 2850 fps out of a 90 to 100 Gr hunting bullet in a 6BR with careful handloading. This is about what factory 243 loads produce over a chronograph.

As you can see I'm a big 6BR fan, but I would go with a 6.5 if large deer were on the agenda. Just my $.02

Yup! If you want to target shoot and hunt with one gun, stay away from barrel burners like the 243 and 22-250. Look hard at the 6.5 Grendel. A 6br would be good too, but the Grendel gives you a little more bullet weight for deer. Mild recoil for both of them.
One of my favorite cartridges is the 6.5x47 Lapua, so you get my vote for it. I have three guns chambered in it and 2 spare barrels as back up. Mild recoil, great bullet selection and accurate.

Pardon my fopah! I just reread your post. For your request, go 6.5x47. You won’t need any modifications, other than a new barrel.

Second what HTSmith says about feeding the 6mm BR, except mine is a 7mm BR. One in the pipe and one in the mag forward works, but thats it. 6.5 creedmoor or the 6.5x47 would be excellent choices.

Make that Third. A buddy has a custom action with R700-308 compatible bottom metal. Magazines are 308 sized, but I believe they're spaced to keep the shorter 6BR's forward. Still has problems. Told him he should go single shot, but I guess it wasn't tactical enough for him.
