Ko1M Light Gun ELR: Solids vs Lead Core Bullets

Hi All,

I have shot 3 light ELR matches with 300 grain Berger OTMs in my 33xc barrel. I just got a new barrel in faster (7) twist and plan to shot solids through it (Badlands or CE).

However when I look at equipment list of top competitors, I see majority are using lead core bullets. I understand lead core provide bigger splah 'on target', but do they provide bigger splash in 'dirt' as well? What other kind of advantages so lead core provide in 338 caliber due to which top shooters prefer them over solids?

thanks for your inputs.

In reality solids make better sense in the 375 and bigger calibers, the impact signature of the 338 and smaller solids is noticeably less than cup/core bullets.
However the ballistics of the solids will make you giggle.
Friend used to shoot light class with a 338 cheytac improved at before moving back to the 375’s for spear point.

Another friend on snipershide informed me about the differences in engraving pressures that cause solids to gain advantage in heavier calibers....but I am still not fully clear about the advantages of lead core in light ELR. Do the lead core provide better splash in dirt? Splash on steel while imp, might not be as important as seeing misses. Trying to pick more brains to understand what advantages these lead cores carry to make all top shooters go for them in light div.

Cup/core definitely has a better impact signature on both hits and misses.
Being able to spot either is a huge part of ELR.
They definitely pressure up different as well

More things I might mention is solids can be a be a bit more difficult to tune and they are definitely more sensitive to bore and grove dimensions, too tight and try pressure up really fast, too lose and leak around Bullet and shoot like poo.

No question if they will transition well cup and core over solid for me any day. The impact splash alone in soil or on plate is far superior.

But I would like your personal assistance to show me how easy you can hit targets at one mile with a 338.

I just developed another new area 20 minutes from home that can go to 1900 yards but I still have to hike that last steel in.

Cigars, Marionberry muffins and coffee optional.

No need to setup any long targets as it is a game of luck and not skill. 1000-2000 yards is all that is needed. Please come to Blakely, GA this fall and show us how you can easily hit the one mile targets.
