Bipod Extenders: How much diff they make (Light Gun ELR)

Hi All,

I am currently shooting 33xc in light gun ELR matches. Last match I saw some competitors using bipod extenders (link below). How much diff do they make to the felt recoil? Are there any other advantages as well? If people who have made the switch, can share their experience, will be great.

I don't compete, but I do shoot a ton at 500 to 1500 yards. I have the double extension version of the BipodEXT and love it. It helps quite a bit with recoil on the 300 WM but it also just makes it smoother and easier to hold steadily at longer ranges. That extra couple of feet makes a big difference in how your rifle reacts to your input. I shoot with and without it for smaller caliber stuff but I definitely prefer it on the large caliber rounds. If I were to go compete tomorrow I would use it no questions asked and wouldn't hesitate! IMHO.

Moving the bipod contact point with the ground (i.e. the fulcrum) forward will serve to reduce movement at the muzzle in response to movement at the rear of the rifle. In other words, it will make your setup a little less sensitive to gun handling errors. It will also add almost 2 lb to the total weight of the setup, which might be worth a very slight reduction in felt recoil. The potential concern would be whether the extensions are relatively flexible and might promote a "bouncing" effect during the recoil impulse.

If the platform is stable moving the bipod out further is not going to make any difference. The important thing is to be able to read the wind/mirage.

When in doubt, deflect. You said. "It will not make any difference in winning." The science says otherwise, even if it be at the margin. At ELR distances, stability is VERY important, just a tad off and you'll miss. Again, the science says it will make a difference. Not a silver bullet but stability is very real.

But he’s wrong here. There’s a reason all the newer elr stocks and chassis’s have really long forends.

I'm just saying, as an engineer, that I simply disagree. A fulcrum is a fulcrum...

It doesn’t take an engineer to get behind one and see the difference on target either

Always enjoy reading some random threads with a hot cup of coffee. Just a different point of view for an old thread. Moving the bipod out would tend to make the stock less stiff and put more of the distrubuted rifle weight on the rear bag (assuming a rear bag or support).

Curious if this has helped with rifle tuning or made it more difficult?

The MOST accurate rifles in the world at 1000 yards do not use extremely long forends on their stocks (F-class and 1000 yard benchrest).

I have not used a bipod extender- but I am skeptical of them (flex / bounce being my primary worry). One of my teammates has one and I plan to test it.

I have a bipod extender, and it has helped me competitively. I have a chassis based 6mm BRA and I wanted to try some f-class competitions without investing in a traditional f-class rifle set up. I shoot in open class and most of the competitors are shooting f-class rifles using very stable front rests with joysticks for recoil management and fine aim point adjustments. I am on a bipod and squeezing a rear bag to make fine adjustments. I did 2 things to improve my set up. First, skis on my bipod which let it move easily straight rearward under recoil, and second the extender which moves the bipod forward. The combination improved the recoil of the rifle which now moves straight back with no hop to either side or upward flip, and gun is much less sensitive to small negative inputs I put in squeezing the bag and/or pulling the trigger. Granted, the BRA isn't a heavy recoiling rifle, but the same principles would apply to a larger caliber.
