Short barreled 22-250AI velocities?

first thing first I've had a few Ackley's the 22-250 never did much better than a standard 22-250
I shot a lot of kote's with 220 swift but moved to 243 ackley 3850fps. but ackley's live with longer barrels.
I think if I were building a short barreled predator gun it be a 223 or a 22 Creedmoor and just live with
300 yds or less which is where most are killed anyway.

26" 12 twist, zero freebore to .020 freebore, 22/250 AI pushes the 55s at 4050 fps with 44.5g of Win 760, had half a dozen barrels at least. The extra velocity really is helpful when you hit one in the stomach at 350 yards, as they are laying in their tracks. At 3750 fps, a hit in the stomach at that distance, they often get up and hobble off.

That’s a cooking velocity with a verified temp unstable powder. I’d be curious to see your actual chamber pressure, because it’s surely north of what I’d run.

Velocity surely matters on impact, to an extent, but not nearly as much as bullet construction and shot placement.

I don't care what the pressure is. Dozens of us in the Predator calling clubs used approx the same load and bullet, starting in 1988. Lot# of powder can vary so powder charge will vary. All of us used SAAMI reamers, Rem or Win brass, 55's of sorts. Universally, all of us used either a zero freeebore reamer or .020-0.30 free bore reamers

We did find that barrels would vary in their velocity with more barrels producing velocity in the 4050 fps area that were typical 6 Groove Hart barrels, but I seemed to pick up additional velocity from Lilja and Pac Nor three groove barrels, the Pac Nor in particular are fast.

I did note that Varget and IMR 4320 were rougher on barrels than AA2700 and Win 760, the bonus being that AA2700 is one of the very coolest burning powders made.

Velocity above is with 27" barrels.
