115 DTAC TBN COATED BULLETS w/nose ring *UPDATE*

Rain finally went on down the road for a bit. Got the 243AI out with the 115 gr DTACs and VV-N165 today. Capt. Oblivious had said earlier in the thread it was the right powder and I believe he is correct. Loaded up 45.7 46.0 46.3 gr. and all three groups were really tight but 46.0 gr. gave me a .163 Will load up 10 shots for tomorrow to check for duplication.

Duplication went well today. Lucked up and have the same temps as yesterday. Load results below. Will chrono next time out.

Nice! Gotta love a big, fast 6mm that shoots in the twos!

I absolutely love this thing. It has spent most of it's life in the safe so I figured I might better get it out and limber it up a bit.
I put one together about ten years ago, thinking it might make a good longer-range varmint/predator rifle. I had an experience similar to yours. The rifle shot just about everything well but had a serious 'thing' for 105 Berger HVLDs and RL-26. 105s at a little under 3,400 would shoot itty bitty little knots and would turn anything it hit inside out. Absolute death ray on groundhogs (living in upstate NY at the time) and crows, the latter usually disappearing in a black puff. I took one whitetail buck with it the season before we moved to Texas. I was hunting with a good friend of mine. We were hunting pasture land and he spotted a decent buck across a pasture on the diagonal from us. I chambered a round and he looked at me funny. 'Too far, man', he said. 'No, it's not.' Bang. Buck reared up, came down in a heap and didn't move.

I know what you mean! It'll keep you smiling.

Went over to SVT_Tactical's house today and grabbed 100 of the 115 DTACs. Got some VV-N165 on the way too. Will get the 243AI on the bench and empty some brass out (everything is loaded LOL) asap so I can see what these bad boys is holding in the accuracy and speed department. Anybody recommend which primer to use ?

BTW, this dude is first class and helps anytime he can. Appreciate all you do Bro.
I’m curious as to barrel life in the bigger 6’s, N165 seems runs cooler in fire forming loads in my 338 and 7SAUM

I’d think the dtacs and N165 should be a quite nice combination.

I have 1059 shots through this current 6SLR 28"barrel shooting N160 from day 1
759 x 105gr VLDs at 3160fps and 300 108gr ELDs 3130fps, last time I scopes it the barrel looked like a Dasher with 600 Varget loads down the pipe. I recon this barrel will easily still be competitive in F-open and steel shooting after 2000 rounds. Last barrel running H4831 the barrel was on its last legs at 1400 shots but I did push that barrel a little harder to be honest.

N165 should do even better in 6 SLR, 6Comp Match, 243AI size cases, I run N165 in my 300WM but haven't really paid attention to much more then how it shoots and it shoots good, I shot N560 in the WM previously and the throat stays "smoother" allot longer running N165 vs N560

Bill what was the velocity on this load. Im shooting a version of an SLR and have used both 160 and 165 with success

Not real sure about barrel life in the 243AI. This is my first rodeo with it but so far I'm not seeing hardly any movement in the throat. Some say barrels don't last long with them. I guess we will see how it goes. I never shoot my barrel over 100 degrees and try to keep it at around 85 mostly.

Have not been back out on the bench with it to check velocity. Plan to next time I shoot it. Berger C S says 46.3 gr. is max for this bullet/powder combo but never included the FPS.

Just checked my load book looks like I averaged about 3180 with a 105 grain and 46 grains of N165 in my 6 Trina

Just got a chance to chrono this load last week. It is fairly slow for the AI @ 2948. Got a test loaded to move on up and see what it looks like. Will follow up once I get it done.

You've got some head room, I think. The 46.3 figure you got from Berger for the 105s sounds light to me. 48 grains and a bit of RL-26 gets ~ 3,400 fps with a 105 Hybrid or VLD-H out of a 26" barrel and N-165 is noticeably slower burning than RL-26 in my experience. The Alliant powder wins when it comes to energy content, but N-165 can produce some pretty impressive velocity.

I've been shooting the 115g DTACs in 600/1000 yard benchrest competition for awhile and have been pleased. I've only used the non-boron coated version. A buddy decided to get out of the sport and I picked up a couple boxes of boron coated 115's from him. Any guidance on load differences you see between coated and non-coated?
