Help !!!!!!! Velocity all over .

Hey guys !

6BR

Just put brand new Shilen 8 twist Savage bull pre fit on.

Using 31g Reloder 15 , Berger 90 BT .

Check out velocities . Gun was dirty , I put on Chrono
and shot 5 shots that are right column . Cleaned gun and shot 6 , which is left column .

I’ve never seen this before !

Brass uniformity
Neck tension
Case fill (are some compressed? I don't know rhe capacity of 6br)
OAL uniformity (some might be jammed some might not, affecting shot start pressures)

And finally weak primers? Might be worth a try to run a test having switched.

If I am interpreting this correctly, your concern is the first two opening rounds after cleaning? To me, this indicates residual solutions in the barrel after cleaning. After I do a cleaning, I run a wet patch of Lock-Ease down the barrel and let it sit. (It evaporates and leaves Graphite behind for conditioning during first round). That first round however, impacts .75 moa lower all the time due to the residual graphite. I've seen this occur sometimes where two shots clear it out but mostly on the first. I always discount the first shot. I've also seen this with residual cleaning solutions and oils. My observation is you succession of shots in the 3k's. That variation is in your reloading consistencies. I'm curious if you are annealing and/or how many reloads on that brass. This could be variable neck tensions from work-hardeness on the brass. Over the years of reloading, I came to realize that work-hardening is not equal across any number of a set of brass. This just two examples.

BTW, I forgot to include that not only first round impacts around .75moa lower, but speedis reduced because the round is pushing out residuals. Obviously, the lower impact is indicative.

Another observation of interest, when you indicate "I put on Chrono", does this refer to a Magnetospeed ? I'm curious if it is setup correctly on the barrel. There are specific mounting parameters in oder for it to record consistently.

Since I've recently purchased a Magnetospeed and only been out with it once, if you have any tips you'd care to share that you've learned I'd appreciate it. I'm following the included instructions but sometimes the experience of a versed user can be indispensable.

Thanks in advance.

As long as you are following the instructions and making sure of correct muzzle placement, the bullet path falls within the rod guage distance and the device is tight on the barrel, then you may have to eliminate it as a cause.

Right or wrong…. I’ve been putting mine at the 6 o clock position and putting the muzzle at the little line in the bottom of the arch for years. Works for me. Tighten that thing up good.

Sounds like an ignition problem. Weak firing pin spring. Dirty, greasy inside bolt slowing FP speed. Primers not seated completely. Dirty primer pockets cushioning firing pin strike. Excessive headspace causing FP to have to push case forward reducing FP force, and/or effectively reducing FP protrusion. Did you use a guage to set headspace?

Personally I would throw out the low charge on the right as a WTH and the two charges on the left after cleaning and just look at 3018 -3052 as closer to reality.
Don’t jump off any bridges just yet.

I have several Savages. All of them have required adjustment for firing pin protrusion (it becomes short over time) and replacing the weak spring. These common ignition issues cause major inconsistencies. And on one, cratered primers were corrected with a PTG bolt head. It's worthwhile to have a backup FP assembly in your range kit.

Thank you for that. I did not know that about the savages.

Ditto on the firing pin assembly...have 2 model 12 Targets...Dasher that will shoot great if I do my part...I just bought a complete fp/spring assembly for I think $25.00 (new)...The other one I've had the fp bushed and turned to .062 so I'll need to send to a Smith for turning the pin....I also have a Defiance Deviant that is just over a year old, and bought a spring for that....if $15-25 will prevent a problem, I'll replace yearly! rsbhunter
