257 roberts from 7x57 or 6mmRem??

Anyone formed 257 Roberts from 7x57 or 6mmRem? Just acquired a 257Ai and I'm finding or not finding a ready source for 257 Roberts brass. Choking on the prices I'm seeing for Nosler at 2.00ea. Looking for some info on forming brass out of 7x57 or 6mmRem.

Chuck have you checked Gunbroker for brass. Whenever I can't find a particular component I check there. Have not bought anything there but it is a small comfort to know that if I absolutely need it is usually there. Back in the early 70's when I started handloading, I made many different cases from military 30-06 brass. Like Rick300 said neck turning or reaming may be necessary.

I have been on GunBroker but other than Nosler there's not much to choose from. Not a fan of fire forming what is being offered as "once fired". My last batch of once fired brass had primer pockets that wouldn't hold a primer.

I've made 257 Roberts brass from 7x57 Mauser and 6mm Rem brass. No issues with either one. I prefer to neck down 7x57 with PPU being my favorite. I have also made it from 30-06 brass and it is a pain in the neck, but if you have to have it, well, you do what you must.
I have some very good 06 norma brass. Do you mind sharing the important steps to get to 257? I have read on the net but it is all over the place. You prefer PPU to Norma?

6mm brass is a simple size with a tapered expander. Necks won’t thicken which will happen with 7x57 brass size down. (Depending on rifles neck clearance may not matter anyway) Be sure brass is new or recently annealed and lube accordingly. Good Luck !

Just to jump in here... I do very well with PPU and much prefer the price vs norma. Also, the 7.7 arisaka brass I have used.. I have both PPU and Norma. I like the PPU better. I don't know how to explain it, but it's smother to resize and seat bullets than the norma. This is both having been fresh annealed.

Lots of people are saying that. Norma gets the good PR for quality price. I think the PPU brass is from E Europe and those guys are no slouches when it comes to ammunition and quality of work. I will start buying PPU when I have a need. Thanks. MW

Chuck Miller said "Not a fan of fire forming" If you resize anything to 257 Roberts AI, you will have to fire form. Or am I missing something.

Recently I purchased a used Ruger#1 in .257 Roberts. I never considered looking for the scarce original brass but bought 200 PPU cases 6,5X57 Mauser. They are the same price as 7X57 but Necking down from .264" to .257" seems easier for me than from .284". Works fine.

This worked out well for me. Graf's had some last month. Neck thickness varies, I may skim turn them. Otherwise it's just one pass through a 257 die to neck down.

I just acquired a Remington 721 rebarreled to 257 AI and was thinking that maybe an alternative to buying brass was buying some factory loaded 257 Roberts ammo and shooting it as this was an advantage to an Ackley Improved. Please help my ignorance but wouldn’t this fire form the brass to your chamber and then you would have once fired brass to reload.
257 Robert's ammunition is very hard to come by.
And yes that is how the ackley shoulder is formed or it was intended.
Shoot factory loaded ammo and blow out the shoulder ..

Since 257 Bob loaded ammo is scarce. We use alternatives..
7x57 brass easy to form..neck down, trim, load and fire.

If you are quite handy it can be formed from 270 winchester,.6.5x57, and even the 30-06 case's..

Just how willing are you.
