Who's got a new truck ?

I had a '78 with a 400 and a 4 speed very similar to this one (mine weren't near as nice). This was maybe 8-10 years ago. It was my daily driver for a couple years, and I think about just how much fun it was driving. The smell off the exhaust, the sound, and shifting gears... That sumbitch had torque enough that down shifting out of fourth at county intersections was optional.

Always wish I'd have kept it and fixed the body up good; it didn't need much but anything like that at this point in life goes on the way back burner.
That's a Truck!

Here's my nicest suburban out of 4. 98 with 54k miles. It's never seen snow. Original owner who I knew, drove it Pa to NC to their second home and stored it covered in the barn. It has a mildly worked over 6.5 turbo diesel, 4:10 gears, auto/od. Runs awesome, gets 18 mpg. Doesn't have all the new stupid shit on it. Smells almost new.View attachment 1440340
I looked at one same color and 3/4 ton also but it had the 8.2 liter gas. 12-13 MPG according to the owner. I just couldn't pull the trigger on it.

I have an 05 3/4 ton with a 6 liter that gets 12 to 13 mile a gallon. At 254,000 mi it's been a good truck, gets used hard, pulls a trailer regularly. One major issue at 170,000 mi had to put a new transmission in it. Other than the transmission it's been just general maintenance.

Are there any models of the gas chevy v8 that you can get without the Active Fuel Management? I've had a couple of friends with late model Silverado 5.3's that had their motors pretty well destroyed by an issue with this. Always been a GM feller, but this scares me.
4.8 dosn't have it. My 07 have been problem free 135k. My 02 went 180k befor the body rotted out, drive train still ran like new. Never even changed the plugs...

I'm looking for a new full size P/U truck.

Who's got a new one .... how do you like it and what did you have before.

I am leaning towards a Tundra or a GMC Sierra, but have not done any research as of yet.

Lemme' know

Thanks

Have had a Chevy, Ford, and a Ram since 2015. Chevy was great...don't know why I traded it for a 2018 Ford except the Ford was a 4x4 and the Chevy was not. Needed the 4x4. Did NOT keep the Ford much more than a year. It had problems with the electronics among other things. The last straw was, with less than 10k miles, it developed a leak from under the dash on the passenger side...sopping wet kinda leak. the dealer scheduled me an appointment to fix it one month out. Arrived for appointment and they told me I needed to reschedule and that they would not be able to provide a loaner while they kept my truck for two weeks - minimum. Nope.

I traded for the first Ram I have ever owned. Have always avoided them because of friends experience with them. But, heard really good things about the 2020 model. Bought a Laramie 4x4. Loved that truck. Ride was just unbelievable. Then, one day, 10 months after owning it, the battery died. This was after I had already taken the truck in for slow ignition and other signs something may be wrong with battery. Dealer kept the truck 3 days and the fianl report was, "We replaced the battery." 3 weeks later, the truck would not shut down. It took me 10 minutes to get the truck to stop. A few days later, the key fob would not lock the doors. The next day, the doors would unlock, but not unlock, and it got crazy after that. Nope.

Now, Chevy was not an option when I went back to town - pricing and availability. However, I did find me a brand new Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x4. Does not have the power or the Hemi, but this truck is great. Just about to have it's 10k oil change. Rated to pull 6400lbs... though I don't think I would. But, unless you absolutely need the BIG truck and the "more power" option, look at the Tacoma. I don't think you will be disappointed in its performance.

Say what? What are you smokin? The old trucks are far superior in reliability and you could work on them yourself. You have to have a PHD to work on the garbage they are pushing out today.

My first truck was a 59 Ford. Leaked oil, had very heavy steering, and was gutless. It also stranded me and required constant maintenance. Next truck was a new 83 Ford Ranger. It also stranded me a couple times and was gutless. My 87 Chevy was okay, but didn't have a lot of power. My 92 Chevy was a maintenance nightmare and low on power.

My dad had a pair of 63 Chevy pickups that also required a lot of maintenance.....and were gutless. His 76 Ford caught on fire...and was gutless. His 74 Chevy with the 454 was okay, but a fuel hog.

The old cars were often worn out at 60,000 miles and the pickups weren't much better. It wasn't until the late 1990s and early 2000s that power, reliability, and mileage started to really improve. The first Duramaxes would run to 400,000 miles if they were taken care of. Later ones will as well.

My 2022 2500 Duramax is massively better in every way than the dozen plus other pickups I have owned. It has WAY more power, more hauling and towing capacity, decent fuel mileage, lots of ground clearance, and is very comfortable. That is pretty much true with all of the newer pickups today.

Yes, there are features I don't like on all of the newer rigs, but over all they are a massive improvement.

I don't find them harder to work on, but then again I have a Master's degree. More importantly, I don't HAVE to work on the newer trucks as much as I did the older ones.

I bought the GMC crewcab with a 3.0 baby duramax in a 22 Denali in september last year , its incredible to say the least ! fuel milage is excellent too. Traded my 19 Tacoma crewcab in on it....Don't miss the tacoma at all. I only pull a 5k pound enclosed trailer 6 times a year and this does very well on ny hills @80mph

Talkin' about old trucks, a guy told me years ago a hillbilly is a guy who drives on the left side of a dirt road in a '72 F150 with a worn out idler arm and shoots woodchucks with a .25 automatic.

Getcha one of these.....

That's just a band aid. Unless you change out all the lifter's with non-AFM/DFM lifter's, you will still end up with trashed camshaft lobes after a while.
The cam phaser's in all of the Ford OHC engines are the same way, they're junk and made to break.

How would GM handle a warranty claim if one of these had been installed? ("They'll never know" is not an answer.)

Don't know! I wouldn't buy a 1/2 ton pickup with these motor's. I drive 3/4 & 1 ton pickup's that don't have them. If you want fuel mileage, buy a compact car to drive.
