What's the most freebore you've used in a 308 win?

I have a chambering that has a really long freebore. Don't know the actual measurement but this is a pic of a 208 hyb that touches the lands. I was wondering for the FTR folks that use the 185-200+gns, what is the most freebore you have found that yield good results.

That should work...whats the seated measurement that shoots the best for you. They all like some jump.

A hybrid should jump well no? I personally would want more neck/bullet contact surface... or as much as possible.. while not sacrificing accuracy.

Rainbow1, if you are playing F-T/R you can live with single feed and don't need consideration for how sturdy or robust the cartridge it since it will never need to be abused by magazine feed. What you are showing will work. However....

The next time you change that barrel, you will want to consider your favorite bullet and load, then study the design trade-offs before you contact your gunsmith.

You are in such well charted waters that you won't have a problem once you are talking to a gunsmith who knows F-T/R.

I requested a 170-180 freebore when I sent it away for chambering. When I was checking out the seating depth, it was obvious that it was much more. I asked him what it was he not sure but said it was long enough for the heavies. I don’t think I’m going back for seconds.

So I was wondering if what appears to be a 200+ freebore with so little neck contact is something that others have had success with or am I likely headed for a plan B.

Your going to have to go give it a try to find out.

My guess is based on being on the planet for a long time and you should be fine for a game where you single load.

Just curious, did you send/give the gunsmith a dummy round with the specific bullet you liked? Or was this project based on communicating numbers?

Unless you are working with a gunsmith who has experience with Fullbore or F-T/R, then you would be far better off with them working to a dummy round and the request to chamber it for a touch on that dummy round. You would be less than 0.005" away from the target seating depth value if they are competent.

A gunsmith with Fullbore background only needs to be told what bullet you plan to run and how you like to seat it.

I have a feeling you will need to find the next gunsmith after you burn this barrel up.

I agree I’m going to try and see. My request was based on the numbers. I’m kinda amazed that a 170ish request (which I think is not unusual) became 200+ and he can’t even tell me what it actually is.

I have moved on and have been lucky enough to have since found a local guy and based on the first one he built for me, I should be in good shape. I’m just trying to realize a good season with this one if I can.

Your gonna need to do some testing and see what It likes feed on. Id try the juggs and the 20X
and see how it shoots. ( Dont be afraid to jump them alot if needed )

My reamer for 200 Hybrids is over .200. I don't remember the exact length. I know some people that have longer freebores than mine for the 200 Hybrids.

I would have no problem shooting that. It is further out than I would spec a reamer for that bullet, but I've shot stuff out that far with success.

Thought I was looking at a picture of the way my set-up is for a 185 Jugg Target . That's about where the Base of the Bullet of my load sits , just below the neck / shoulder junction . I run a 180 Free-Bore , and it is enough to shoot the 200.20x and 200 Hybrid , also . The 208 is down in the case little to deep for my liking , when even only .005 off touch .
