Why I ditched the Noga for holding the Interapid when indicating the bore...

Even though the process isn't related to any absolute measurements and just relative movement, using the Noga meant that there was never any consistency as the stylus isn't held perfectly parallel to the spindle axis. I had a lightbulb moment (for me, anyway) and took a short piece of round stock, drilled a hole for a slip-fit for the Interapid stem along with another for a set screw to lock it in place. Stick it the toolholder, set the appropriate height and go from there.

Now, when I dial the throat and just ahead of the breech, I can work towards an actual "zero" which is the same at each end as I slide it in/out with the carriage. Probably won't matter to anyone else here, but I find working with the same numbers on the dial makes it easier for me. Can't do that when holding it with the Noga as the stylus will never be parallel to the spindle axis and it's going to ride at a different location on the "clock" depending on it's locating on the z-axis.

I ordered a boring bar holder to just dedicate a tool holder . But making your own was a good idea.

This isn’t a barrel this was just a piece of scrap I was using to make something else. Just threw the indicator on here for photo

I did the same thing just drilled a hole for the indicator in a piece of aluminum flat bar and put it in a tool holder.

Becuase my reamer holder and reamer is there. "easier" to use a toolholder.

Careful. Some of them are rock hard. You can do it, just use a good tap.

I’d just drill it and press in a softer insert to drill and tap that for the thumb screw.
I don’t have any reliable way of tapping hardened steel.

I looked and there’s a perfect area on one of my boring bar holders.

I do have a 5C collet holder that I could use as well.

Just make a sleeve for one of those useless boring bar holders you never use anymore.

^^^ Nice setup I can quickly swap between Interapid’s and the Mit 513’s with the collet.

Basically same as you i have all my indicators set up with a 3/16" shank mount . Easy quick standardized swaps between tool posts (collet) , mag bases, or just grabbing in a Jacobs 3 jaw.
