Barrel Nut Disadvantages?

A couple of posters have mentioned the actual size of a barrel nut might present a problem.

Not particularly the length, but more the diameter. Too thin, the nut could distort, compromising the joint.
Too large, aesthetics become an issue.

Any thoughts on this?
The after market nut and lugs from Northland for the Savage look good. The Remage nut looks terrible. I have both. Just my opinion.
 
Someone on here obviously does not want the test done. I hope Jackie gets it done and followed up with others. Most on here do not understand the level of precision or accuracy that Registered Competition demands. " Not world class but close enough" won't cut it in our disciplines.
There are 65K members here. How many are world class? There are a lot of folks here, myself included, that will never shoot in the big matches. And I sure would like to know what a world class shooter can ring out of a well built nut barrel.
 
Jackie, my approach is going to be an 1.250 O.D. round nut with two blind holes on the front face and a two pin style spanner wrench.

I sketched up a Tommy bar' style, too. But this could distort the nut when torqued aggressively.
None of my barrels are over 40 lbs. So far so good.
 
Respectfully, it's not that at all. Nothing could be further from the truth.

One one hand, there are proponents of barrel nut systems that claim they perform as well as shouldered barrels in actual competitive events.

On the other hand, there are a group of involved people that simply want to know if a barrel nut system works as well as a shouldered barrel in actual competitive events. They may very well do so. Maybe there's some advantages for barrel nuts at that level of competition. These people are willing to spend their time and money to actually test both systems impartially and let the results speak for themselves.

The middle is occupied by the vast majority.

None of this is personal or in any way directed at any one individual.

Some of us don't take anything on face value. We simply have to know. For me personally, it's the learning that's important.

I personally don't care if my nut barrels are not up to world class standards but I would be disappointed if they are not close.

To be perfectly honest I’ve shot small 1000 yard groups with both types.
Amen! Brad is not trying to covert you world class shooters over to barrel nuts. He is simply trying to give a lot of shooters that can't afford a 6 to 10 dollar gun a close alternative. That is whole purpose of this business.

And that's another excellent point. I anticipate that the results if this test aren't going to be apart by a significant margin no matter how the test turns out. But it will be interesting to see because it's entirely possible most shooters wouldn't be able to shoot the difference anyway. I think it's all about learning and additional information to help make a smart choice for a personal use perspective.
Hopefully that doesn't stir any hornets up, I don't mean that in a derogatory way at all. Just stating a possible truth.
 
Well then if others are willing to put together a test why does that bother you?
Let the results speak for themselves. I don't understand the issue.
If one barrel is just as expensive than another then I think it's even more pertinent to test and see if both attachment methods are equal. To me that question validates the reason for a test.
If a Chevy and a Ford both cost the same then I'm going to look at other factors to base my purchase on. Same logic applies here I think.

Im not really reading any elitism in this thread. But maybe Im not good at picking up on it. My pillow is not frozen to the wall anymore so maybe I have grown a big head. Anyhow I wouldn't loose any sleep over it.

I have a nice piece of 4142 Chrome Moly at 38 RC, it’s a left over drop from a job.

I have about a three day outside align boring job working a crew at SouthWest Shipyard starting tomorrow, so I won’t be able to get started for several days.

I will set a dividing head up to put a dodecagon shape (12 sides) on the outside to fit a 12 point end wrench. That is a good way to retain the wall thickness. Chuck that up in a 6 jaw, do the thread, which will be a 1.245 inch 20 tpi, and face at the same time.

I am just trying to avoid the "you chamber barrels and shoot LRBR, so you should do this test since you started the thread and insist that the test be done at long range".......

I like the Alex/Tom/Glenn idea better...... :cool:

If I had the time I would love to test stuff like this and report on it. It's gonna be a while before I get to that point.
If they want to take the time, they can do the Long Range.

I can do 100/200.

To be the same as other nut setups youd make the nut 1 1/8-16 and just extend the tenon thread til the barrel tapers off. See savage tenon print. Your drawing there wont be a typical nut job
