My chickens would starve if they ate only grass. They nibble on grass, but they eat food higher in protein, e.g. bugs.

If you want to see real Grass Fed Hens, then visit Mills College in Oakland, CA.

My chickens sure like table scraps - will eat anying except oranges.

My brother and I would catch a bunch of mice in the barn and feed them to the chickens.
Funny as hell to watch them old hen run a mouse down and gobble 'em up whole and kicking.

Witnessed the same when my Grandfather moved a small sheet of tin roof between the henhouse and a mature Peach tree. Mice scattered across the yard where the majority of the Hens and a frighteningly large Rooster were pecking the morning scratch tossed out for feeding. It went from peaceful, soft clucking/purring as they fed to utter chaos and cacophony as they chased down and battled one another for the Mousy Meals!
There were no survivors!
