BR stock Painting.

Hey Guys,
My friend is painting my rifle stock and I’m excited! He is an artist with an airbrush, I’ve seen some of his work and it’s first class. And to boot, he is very creative. We had discussed the art work, and I think he has come up with a great idea. He has the stock and is working on it now. I’ve been getting daily pics of his progress, and thought I’d share here as it progresses.

Here’s a couple of pics of my ole Wichita rifle in 220 Beggs.

Beautiful rifle, and cool lettering.

But today you don't need to be a pro, or an airbrush artist to pain a BR stock. Rattle Canned Ruby Red, with Rattle Canned 2K automotive clear coat. Just to much metallic under the candy for a cell phone to photograph, picture don't do it justice in the sun, just to much glitter. But very subdued in the shade and cloudy days, but still gives that automotive paint finish.

But I'm no painter! But with the automotive paints in spray cans ready mixed for use from Custom Paints, for $160.00 I had enough primer, course metallic silver, and candy ruby red, to paint two stokes and their 2K clear with the activator clip to release the hardener into the clear, anyone can be a pro. and trust me the nozzle's provided on these paints are not the same as Krylon or Rustolium! And they are more than willing to share their knowledge to help anyone.

To me a better choice, and les mess and cost for small jobs like stocks.

I've used it too. You're right...it works way better than expected. Just don't try to get that last bit out. It seems to lose pressure and metallics lay down differently, IME. But the hardest part is swallowing that pill of paying about $65 for a 12oz spray bomb!
I didn't use their clear, just the base color and pagan gold candy, in my case. I used my normal method of auto clear from a paint gun for the clear. I still prefer the spray pattern I can get with my gun but those cans absolutely are not bad at all.

I should have stated Kustom Colors, but here is their website candy page, and the can's choices page.

They offer so many creative paints for small projects, I want to try more, and inexpensive! No mess to clean up, no mixing, no hardeners and reducers and tints,,, just order what you want to see when sprayed and pitch the can when done!

I have bought automotive paint mixed and put in cans loccally before to paint the gauge pod in my powerstroke Dully a few years back, and irt was great with the plastic activator and plastic prep I had to use with it, and was expensive. But this is not, and is top quality in my opinion, at least up till now as this is only 6 months old.

$44.00 for the candy kit,
1 can course metallic
1 can your choice of candy colors
1 can 2k Clear.

I bought 2 cans of primer, (grey) 3 cans candy, 2 cans course silver metallic, and 2 cans 2K clear. I have more than half left! For a stock the above kit is all thats needed for a rifle stock, with some left.

I was instructed to after prep, to use my choice of primer color, but used to grey to cover easier with the silver.(which I would have spent more time doing, had I known just how capable these paints are)

I was then told to give it 2 coats of course silver.

Then 3 coats of the candy ruby red,,,, I should have listened! I figured heck if three is good, 5 is better? WRONG! I mean I'm happy, and in any light it pops like you cant imagine! But it would show the candy affect with the metallic under 3 coats better in the shade and cloudy days, the extra coats just muted the affect more than most would like!

All coats within 1/2 hour of each other, light even coats to keep from running. Then within two hours hit it with three coats of the 2K clear, and then withing 24 hours pitch whats left, once the hardener is activated the clear has to be used (they say) within 24 hours, I say withing 6 hours to be sure of a thin even spray, like Gunsandgunsmithing said about the very end of a can.

I didn't have a problem emptying the candy with good spray pattern and coverage. but as the clear and hardener start activation, it is getting thicker before 24 hours as I tested it. 12 hours is as long as I would use it once the hardener has been activated.

That's a lot better price and a different brand from what I used. I couldn't say either way about that brand but I'd give it a try at that price. The stuff I used was top notch, from what I could tell.
