Short range Br bbl twist questions.

NC/Br Shooter

Silver $$ Contributor
So in short range Br. The 6ppc, 6br, 6 bra, 6dasher are the cartridge s most shooters choose.
I know the 30br is the score king but my question only pertains to the 6mm.
It's really a barrel question.
So my question is" If a 6br cartridge is to complete against the 6ppc, should that 6br barrel be a slower twist barrel with a short free bore?"
Reason I ask this is because I see lot's of 6br shoot well and I'm interested in staying shooting 6br case. Iv only shot the fast twist 6br barrels.
If I'm wanting to agg well in short range, mainly 100 yard shoots, should I just get a 13.5, or 14 twist barrel? Shoot 60 to 70g bullets?
Can a fast twist barrel agg against slower twist barrel's assuming they both are loaded optimally?
Or could ask it like this," Can a shooter agg well shooting 100 grain bullets as well as a shooter who is shooting 60 or 70 grain bullets?
I know this is a loaded question but I always appreciate what you guys reply.
Thanks again

I go against the grain of conventional wisdom.
I'm building a 250 Savage based around a light bullet for short range benchrest.

Most of the people i shoot with using the 6BR are shooting in the 105-110gr bullet weights.
So they would require the faster twist rates.

I shoot 100 & 200 yard benchrest at my club, when I was shooting my 6BR's I stuck with 14 twist for the light Berger BR column bullets at 100, switched to 10 twist for windy days at 200, and used 90 grain Berger BT's
Ended up club champ 4 years in a row:)
If I were to go back to a 6BR, I would think seriously about a 12 twist & get BART's 80 dominators & go have a lot of fun!

This is the second or third time a 12 twist has been suggested to me.

I talked to Bart & he told me the 80 grain dominators will shoot well in a 12 twist, I asked, even the BT's? and he repeated the answer YES, SO, If I went back to the 6BR, I would do 12 twist & Barts FB's at 100, BT's at 200
At our club, the 200 yrd range runs behind a pistol berm & a sea container, & finishes up behind the 100 yrd berm! wind is ALWAYS a S.O.B. at 200! LOTS of swirling stuff going on there!
OH, in answer to a 6BR competing with a ppc, YOU really need to bring your "A" game & hope the other guy didn't, not saying it woudn't be close, but, I very rarely beat the guys that showed up with the ppc's

I’ve won a local match or two with a 22 Waldog in a 12 twist with 52gr Bib bullets, and my 8 twist dasher with 103 VT bullets will hold its own against a ppc most days in a 5 target agg. Our range can be blustery, and when calm, the gremlins come out!
Yesterday at a club shoot, a dasher shooting @Tom E VT 103’s put the whoop on the small group contest at 100 yards against a field of ppc’s. This was a new to the shooter rifle, with a new barrel. It took him a few targets to sort out what his new rifle wanted as far as balance in the rest/bags and such but it will shoot small.
I actually shoot an 8 twist dasher shooting heavies in my rail at 100 and 200, mid pack is the best I’ve finished so far in a registered event. Those ppc’s can agg, no question about it.

PPC gives you lighter recoil and less bag upset and the along with the slower twists reduced torque. You can return to POA quicker in order to shoot in the same condition as the previous shot.
Add to this the PPC will have less flight time (more velocity) even when the BR is shooting comparable bullets.

I don't see how. The BR case is larger and holds more power. Shooting the same weight bullets the BR will result in less flight time.
Check out the 6 PPC and 6 BR pages on the main site. The numbers are close, but the PPC delivers best accuracy when pushed at the top of the load window, not necessarily true of the 6 BR IME.

So my .222 Remington with a Krieger 13 twist and 50 grain Barts & BIB's isn't a contender in 100 yard BR? Just kidding. I built it to try and duplicate what Walt Berger did in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's.
You never know until you try. I have a .222 HV on a Rem action that I have competed with in VFS on occasion since 2005. I have won with a 6 Beggs against 20 other shooters with 30 BR's and felt pretty good about it. I can't image how it would feel to do that with a .224 caliber -I am talking Score, not group.

not at short range..
Exactly. The one or 2 people I know who shoot SR score with a 6BR use between a 13.5 and 14TW with 68 grain FB or BT bullets. Shooting a 6BR against a 6PPC in SR group is like shooting a 30BR in a group shoot. You might as well stay home. Ya once in a great while someone will win with a 6BR but that's rare. Almost like shooting a PPC at a 100 yard score match and winning. Only seen it done 6 or 7 times in 10 seasons of shooting SR score. Pick the right tool for the right job.

I was going to make a long post of all the "whys" and "why nots" of whether or not a 6BR could compete against the PPC at short range, but all it really boils down to is, if it could it would be. Others have tried it, and no matter how much merit it appears to have, it hasn't played out that way.

The 12, 13.5, or 14 would be a great place to start. My pick FWIW would be either a 13.5 or 14 tw. And don't expect instant success. It is a learning curve. But there's a lot of different high quality bullets to try in the 63-70gr range. JMHO.WD
