Sigs new military round looks badass. 6.8x51. Necked down 308 to .277. Had to put a steel sleeve around the head for the 80000 psi it generates. 135 gr at over 3000 fps. Basic short .270 . Never gave us body armor in Nam. Gave us M16's A1's that jammed and no cleaning kit. Little sobs got right back up. To use their AKs And SKS's . At least you could stick your finger in a 7.62 hole. 556 pc of crap. Sorry if I sound a little bitter. IMHO "we the people" Rob

Stoner warned them that the AR16 had to be kept cleaned and oiled. The brass ignored him. When they finally got around to asking the question of why it jammed so often, they sent him to Nam to fix the problem. Soon after, they issued cleaning kits and solved the problem but not before and lot of GI's died. As for caring for their wounded, hey passed the buy in their attacks and picked them up on the way out but did not treat them until they were away from the battlefield. I read somewhere that it took many thousands of rounds to each kill from our troops because of the spray and pray tactics.
Loved the 14. Loved the BAR better. (BadAssRifle) Shoot right thru the trees. Heavy bastard but would bring some pee. That kept their heads down when you opened up with that. When they told me I had to turn in my 14 for that plastic nightmare , I said HELL NO , and told the Armorer I'd take that beat up old SKS in the corner . Traded up for a newer version "Charles" no longer needed , and still have it in the Gun Case . When it absolutely , positively has to be taken down with one round , a .30 Caliber is required .

It's not a new idea, with SS head and brass or aluminum case to make up the rest of the case.
It was advertised in Precision Shooting mag over 20 yrs ago.
And Shell Shock has been making 2 piece 9mm cases with SS heads for a long time, and claim 2 times the strength of brass cases, have 115 gr at 1521 fps in a test and loaded some 185 gr bullets in 9mm ....And you can purchase there cases by the thousands for reloading...rather cheap. It just doesn't seem to catch-on,..the two piece case.
I can run 168 Berger in a 308 at 2920 - 2930 fps in a 22" barrel. So another 100 fps seems unimpressive, for SS case head. We probably run some of those brass cases to 70,000 psi anyway. 80,000 is not much of a stretch. Good hand loaders could run them at 90000 psi. A pipe bomb next to the head, as the trigger is activated.
With all the robotic armies, drones, and electronic gagets planned, in the present & near future a cartridge rifle seems...outdated.
The drone has face recognition, infra red, and armed, with the latest technology, and rocketry, it can find YOU in the dark and you'll never know it's there.
The 135 gr armor piercing bullet at a mere 3000 fps is usless. This will not change the outcome of any war.
7mm-08 would seem to be a better military case...but I depend on the bullet, and what the government is trying to accomplish...like give my brother- in- law a big military contract, to grab up some personal retirement cash, as VP of the company, a multi million dollar gig, just to show up once a week, to discuss "business" with my provided personal secretary.

The idea behind the 80,000 psi load is to achieve the required velocity from a 16 inch barrel, with a proprietary powder.
I thinks there's a lot of useful life left in hand held firearms, especially with the advent of the new technology that's come about. For example, Vortex's smart optics they're building for the military. And there's automatic targeting systems like what TrackingPoint is producing. Because of such systems, maybe they need cartridges that can make it all more advantageous?

The whole premise for developing this round was/is to 1. defeat level 4 armor at 600 yds and 2. lighten the ammunition.
