Who would you nominate as greatest gunsmith?

I have heard several times that it's the steel that makes a hummer. Has anyone rounded up a bunch of shoot out hummers and tested to see if there is some thing different in the alloys of hummer barrels?

I think that shooting is like many other competitive sports in that the people at the top of the game often put the most work in. I would be willing to bet that most of the top shooters know within just a few rounds if they will keep a barrel or take it off and start over. Maybe they get a little more access to barrels from the makers so that the wait time is not as long, but they probably go through some barrels to find the hummer.

Tony told me that 50 rounds told him all he needed to know.

Butch Over the years I have seen guys take barrels off that they said didn't shoot and someone else buy them re chamber them and they shot like a house of fire.
And I have had barrels myself that have shot very good and re chambered and they still keep shooting to a point. But I also believe a straight chamber is a must;
That is were the Great gunsmiths come in play.

Joe, I had a barrel that wasn't up to snuff and I gave it to a friend. It was chambered for a Panda and needed nothing as headspace and all were perfect. My friend shot 2 zero groups with it in a match in Midland, Texas.

This could open up a whole discussion on a barrel being a hummer for one action and a tomato stake for another.

I think that guys that shoot world class scores and win the Nationals know way more about loads and what is a good one than I do.

kind of off topic but I'm betting TB and many others have a pretty good idea if a barrel is any good in 12-15 shots..

Lots of great smiths in BR. lots of great 1911 builders, etc..
