I have a disease -- Competitionshooteritis

I have a disease! It’s called competitionshooteritis. It can be infectious! Others around you can’s see it but they can feel it, it makes you want to spend time practicing, reloading, learning more about shooting, seeking knowledge and more! At first I thought it was like a skin rash that I could scratch ever now and then but NO, it is much worse. It is all consuming, it will rob you of time with family (but not friends that shoot), it will cost you money, it will make you stay at the range longer than you wanted to be, it will cause you to clean you guns differently, more often and more efficiently. Money will be spent on primers, brass, bullets (multiple brands looking for that “special” one) and powder (so many will do the job but there may be only one possibly two that will make that single hole in paper, it will make you learn to not only hear the wind but learn to “read” it!!
This disease will make you travel farter than you want to go, get up earlier that you want to rise and stay later because of the good company.

I’m afraid there is only one cure (no not winning all the time, that only feeds the need) and that is age, loss of feel, sight (hearing was gone long ago due to not knowing better!). I pray I have a few more years to do this and will still have a family when I’m done (if not I wish them well), I would like to win a National agg but if not, well we’ll just keep trying. For the guys that “just compete against themselves” you are not a competitor, I’m sorry don’t mean to hurt feeling but sometimes I do, you are not living to your full potential! You will never know it because you don’t compete. Join the ranks, let’s make this sport grow, bring new people into the sport and watch the infection grow. I had that disease. Thank God I'm getting over it. The sooner the better Frankie.

Another issue with this disease is that there is no longer such as a thing as just shooting for fun ( plinking if u will). At the range u are either testing a rifle/ load/ chronographing or it is a practice session. This session is focused on getting ready for a match , shooting the course of fire that is to come. Making each shot count and working on shot execution, wind reading, shooting strategy.
our team of four shooters gathers every Sunday ( weather permitting) to shoot at match distances and informally compare results. It is serious business having this much fun

If u want to see how inexpensive this sport is, take up racing cars or boats!
I raced Boats and Drag Bikes through the ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. The old saying that “speed costs, decide how fast you want to go” was true then and is true now.

As for as this disease being discussed, at 76 years old I figure the permanent cure is just over the hill.

I did drag cars, motocross, had a rail and did dirt track, I qualify as really dumb!

This is me in 1975 at Morgan City Louisiana competing for ”The Kings Cup”. APBA 5 lap circle racing on a 1.5 mile course. I dug the trophy out of the attic when we moved to Tomball, and I want to get it restored.
When I quit boats in late ‘79, I started drag bikes. I ended up on a high gear only fuel Harley untill I decided to get off……..at about 165 mph at the old Houston International Track south of Houston.

It did not kill me, but proved what the human body can take and still be put back together into a relative complete human.

It all seems long, long ago in a galaxy far away.C936C78F-DCE6-41F1-9366-8F953AE60E68.jpegAE086DAD-DD9F-43F7-8F62-ABFEDC5086B6.jpeg

I developed a similar disease in the mid 70's that lasted until the mid 90's that was diagnosed at NRA precision pistol competition. The more awards, metals and trophies I won the worse the disease became and the lighter my wallet became. :(

Finally, I was cured in the mid 90's when a severe elbow problem developed which necessitated me having to give up the competition since I could no longer hold a pistol with one hand and shoot accurately.

Then, as fate would have it, I was struck by another disease in the late 90's, ground hog hunting. :(:( Even worse, was the secondary infection that was diagnosed as precision rifle shooting / reloading. :(:(

Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover the treatment of these diseases, so my wallet keeps getting lighter but, what a way to go. ;););) After all, you cannot take it with you to the other side so you might as well use it while you can.:rolleyes::rolleyes:
