I have a disease -- Competitionshooteritis

You think this is bad, wait until you discover Schuetzen rifles. It's four matches in one, usually two days. You shoot iron sights from the bench, then a separate match from the offhand. Then you mount your big external (usually) adjustment scope and shoot from the bench, then finish up offhand. The 25-ring is 1.5" all shot at 200 yards. Two ten shot matches each discipline. Five targets each at the Nationals over four days.
Before you get to your first match, you have to learn how to cast a, say, 215gr semi spitzer .32 caliber bullet, to the tune of .5 grain difference. You have this little tool called a breech seater, that lets you insert the bullet into the throat and put a powder charged case in the chamber. Then you set your double set trigger, and tickle that front 1.5-2 ounce trigger.

Holy Smokes!
Brilliant work!

Guys that raced motorcycles back in the day had a theory that if you spent enough money that you didn't have, and never let up on the spending that eventually funds would rush in to fill the void. It's called creating a money vacuum, most don't have what it takes to never let up on the spending, deep down inside they have a tiny bit of responsibility, thus there is not enough critical mass to start the vacuum.

I have a disease! It’s called competitionshooteritis. It can be infectious! Others around you can’s see it but they can feel it, it makes you want to spend time practicing, reloading, learning more about shooting, seeking knowledge and more! At first I thought it was like a skin rash that I could scratch ever now and then but NO, it is much worse. It is all consuming, it will rob you of time with family (but not friends that shoot), it will cost you money, it will make you stay at the range longer than you wanted to be, it will cause you to clean you guns differently, more often and more efficiently. Money will be spent on primers, brass, bullets (multiple brands looking for that “special” one) and powder (so many will do the job but there may be only one possibly two that will make that single hole in paper, it will make you learn to not only hear the wind but learn to “read” it!!
This disease will make you travel farter than you want to go, get up earlier that you want to rise and stay later because of the good company.

I’m afraid there is only one cure (no not winning all the time, that only feeds the need) and that is age, loss of feel, sight (hearing was gone long ago due to not knowing better!). I pray I have a few more years to do this and will still have a family when I’m done (if not I wish them well), I would like to win a National agg but if not, well we’ll just keep trying. For the guys that “just compete against themselves” you are not a competitor, I’m sorry don’t mean to hurt feeling but sometimes I do, you are not living to your full potential! You will never know it because you don’t compete. Join the ranks, let’s make this sport grow, bring new people into the sport and watch the infection grow. I got my girlfriend and two sons into F class shooting and now I truly get more excited when they win as opposed to me. I take more pride in it, and you have no idea how hard that is to say coming from the most competitive person you’ve ever met. So I feel one “cure” for your disease is to get someone close to you into competing.

Two years, 3 pages, and 50 posts later and it still hasn't dawned on anyone that it's NOT a "disease," but a SYMPTOM of one. In this case it's Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, aka OCD.

An earlier poster said they were getting out of it (BR), to which another replied "yeah but," the person was getting into vintage-muscle cars.

News Flash: Trading one obsession for another is NOT a "cure." That would require, admitting there's a problem, therapy, and medication.

Folks I know with OCD aren't aware they even have it, let alone it's a problem and/or try to get help. They just double down on whatever it is they do, and keep on, keeping on ...

Just saying,

SJ

That sounds like a serious gambling addiction. If only spending money equated to winning.

What you don't realize is I am all the letters (ADHD, ADD and more) BEFORE they had them in the alphabet!

I find my desire to try everything is tempered by also wanting to be efficient. Luckily I'm not one of those people who will put an inordinate about of time and effort into incremental improvement. I'm glad they exist, as they push things forward, but it's not for me. I also like to participate at lots of different types of shooting, you can't be the best unless you really dedicate yourself to one of them. I obviously don't want to win bad enough! These days I just try to score better than last time, winning is just a nice side effect if it happens. Remember, if you're not enjoying it you're doing something wrong ;)

At least you know that Frankie. As such, if you decide to address them you'll know where to start. Most people with one (or more) don't, and won't listen to anyone who tells them they do.

With BR season here, I hope you're enjoying yourself and getting to some Matches.

If so, good luck! :)

Thanks so much, life can be cruel but it can also be filled with Grace too!

If you think this sport is expensive ; take up Skydiving ! Rigs and other necessary equipment compare to shooting , and when I had to stop in 82 , due to a Industrial injury , the "ride" to Ten Grand was around $15.00 Bucks . Back in that era , you could burn up half a weekly paycheck on a Saturday , or Sunday . The main reason I worked at the D.Z. for thirty-five years .
