Bad piece of brass

If you have 1 piece of brass that you suspect is a problem child but it weighs out both dry and with water capacity compared to the others , what would be your next step ? I have never weighed my brass and for sure never checked case capacity so I was just trying to learn something. I shot a 5 shot group gathering speed with my magnetospeed It set out from the other 4 low and left with a lower fps also. I marked that piece of brass and shot a group on a calm day at 200 and once again it stepped out to the left from the others. Could it be just coincidence. It’s 223 Starline brass so if I did toss it no big loss. Thanks in advance

When i get a flyer with a proven load ,I pitch it. But that,s just me. I don,t wast time trying to find out why. Tommy Mc

If I had as much experience as you I probably would too but I don’t, I’d like to learn something from my mishaps for once. Could have been me or the load, it’s sure no bench rest gun and I’m sure no bench rest shooter

If you were testing with the magnetospeed still on the bbl, I would not attempt to draw any conclusions about groups, tune..any of that.

How far off to the left from the other shots? What did the four shot group measure compared to the five shot group with the "flyer".

What shot was that case, i.e., first, second, etc. Was it always fired in that sequence?

You may want to try varying the sequence of shots with the case in question and see if you still get a "flyer" with that case.

I separate the flyers out after 2 times. I don't toss them. I use them as warm-up/foulers. I use remnants of bullets lots in these cases.

+1^^^ That's what I do with em. I've had them separated out and come back into the groups too. WD

Here it is with magneto attached. Edit file is too big. I have pictures of both but won’t upload sorry. It’s good enough to kill at those ranges I’ll just keep it marked for blood or foulers. NOT GROUPS

In the final analysis, that's all the matters for a hunting rifle. ;)

true. any amount of slipping fore/aft and/or rotation will effect poi. my rifles always shoot away from the bayonet... some 1/2 moa, some more than 1 moa.
Yep, and it changes tune. What shoots best with it, may or may not shoot without it...even if it didn't slip around. I use mine strictly for velocity numbers, usually after I've found a load that shoots small.

You may have a case with uneven case wall thickness.
could be, but if a neck wall is uneven, would it always throw the shot the same direction? seems like the chance of indexing that particular case in the chamber would make it more random?

now, if someone has lots of time and components to spare, i imagine this could be tested. i seem to recall back in olden times, before brass prep was as meticulous, of shooters marking (then orientating) the cartridge when chambering it?

Toss it and any others that repeatedly display odd fps

If you have a piece of brass that you can't explain, time permitting, I would continue the experiments.
If for no other reason education.
I have a couple. Marked the base with Brass Black.
If something is different, I want to be able to measure, smell, or taste what is different.

One wrap of masking tape on the barrel under the MagnetoSpeed strap should hold it still.

Why are you even considering this??? Just throw the damn piece out if for nothing more than piece of mind. When I get an unexplained flier, I place the brass upside down in my box and mark the head with red sharpie when I get home. Then if that piece misbehaves a second time, it goes straight in the trash at the range, and I don’t give it another thought.
