.308 Mauser Project (Junker Build)

A friend of mine had the old stock and a Mauser action to fit it (It also came with a 1" straight .308 chambered barrel of unknown origin I will use for something else eventually). I gave him 2 bills for it and dragged it home to play with.

The pictures are of the roughing out, the stock will be redone and the metal coated.

The barrel was a GM Blank .308 1:11 Twist I turned on the lathe. It is now chambered and head spaced. I fit it all to the stock and have to build a rail to fit a channel in the bottom of the stock. I also drilled and tapped for scope mounts, hardest receiver I ever tried to drill.

I made the bolt handle and welded it on, I made it fit tight and compact to the stock. I will update when I get it all finished. it has a BLIND magazine pocket contained in the stock. I cut up an old Mauser lower and used the trigger guard and magwell.

I just wonder about the history of this old stock, what it is etc...

Stock looks similar to a Parker Hale-- but the forend is different than the ones I've worked with. My vote is PH.
GM barrels are probably the best kept "secret" for a budget blank- I haven't used many of them (I HATE contouring), but the ones I have were surprisingly accurate.

I think it is a cool project. (Just tell everybody that the bolt handle was inspired by MausingField.)
What trigger are you going to install?

Do you know what vintage Mauser Action it is?

keep us posted.

Looks to be a 1955 Spanish 762 action. Not sure on the trigger, need one with a side safety.

Now that you say it my friend did mention it was a Parker Hale deal SarcoINC once sold as a package a long time ago.... Thanks for reminding me! You are right on the GM barrels, I have turned many of them and they shoot with the BEST of them. Thank god for my 11foot Southbend and taper attachment :)

A little more research it seems I have a Parker Hale M82 military stock as it has the internal magazine and no accommodation for the regular floor plate.... interesting,.,.

Yep. Did this one for a customer a couple of months ago- milled the stock for CDI bottom metal.

That stock is a parker hale Canbera ( spelling ) worth about $300-$500 .
Kinda rare and when sold here , the stock was $250 25+ years ago . Still have a few .

The stock reminds me of an old Anschutz BR stock. I love these projects! I can't wait to see what the op does with it!

I finished up the old gal today, just need to put a scope on it now. I am not a big fan of .308 but I am excited to hunt this one!

The stock is definitely Parker-Hale. It was used on the more expensive versions of the single-shot P-H M84 308 sling rifle ('Target Rifle' we call it in the UK; Fullbore or Palma in the US) and was standard in the M87 military / police magazine fed marksman rifle sold in 243 / 308 Win and .300 Win Mag. I had an ex UK police .243 M87 maybe 20 years ago and the stock was identical to the one in the pics. It's basically a prone target design, and very ergonomic / comfortable.

P-H by the 1980s used a Mauser type action built around a La Coruna manufactured '98 bolt which was heavily modified with a new shroud, trigger assembly and safety. The receiver was a flat-top P-H design manufactured in-house and built more heavily than the military Mauser 98 version with a much smaller ejection port and in flat-bottom form for the single shot 'TR' M84s. Google Parker-Hale M87 and you'll see loads of pics of rifles with this (P-H) action and your stock.

As the action in the pics looks more original-M98, this may not have been the original P-H item assuming this started as complete P-H rifle rather than an M98 action + P-H stock build. P-H did use modified recovered military M98s from cheap K98s and similar that flooded the international arms market in the 1950s / 60s in sporting, target, and military sniper rifles in earlier models, but they were a decade or so earlier than that stock.

I always liked P-H 'Mausers'. With that stock and a decent barrel, I'm sure you'll end up with a fine and good-shooting rifle.

Here's a link to an earlier thread on these rifles where I put a trio of pics up including a couple of my 243 Win M87.

https://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/looking-for-m84-parker-hale-expert.4035954/

Looking around online at M87s, I see they were made in 7mm Rem Mag too for some customers.
Thanks for all the good information! I have over 50 different bolt guns but somehow this one is exciting me the most! I just LOVE it and I have yet to even shoot it. I am torn on the scope to use....

I put the finishing touches on the rifle today - It is a bit of a Frankenstein, built on a FR8 Mauser receiver, Parker Hale stock, Green Mountain barrel, Timmeny Deluxe trigger, and an ARKEN SH4 scope.
