Seating long for travel

Seating the bullet long seams common for travel with light neck tension. How far out from your final depth do you prefer to seat? Fairly new to this so trying to figure things out.

Thanks
Alan

Well i seat out long with very slight next tension, but its not for travel. I do it so when i chamber a round it seats into the lands the same even as barrel wears or slight difference in lot to lot in bullets. I target shoot against me and friends only. I only do this on my 6br since its only shot from a bench.

Not sure what you mean about "traveling" but I often travel 20 to 30 miles for varmint / predator hunting and over 100 in the days when I hunted deer / bear.

While I'm always open to learning more about anything that will improve performance, I'm not sure of or perhaps understand the benefits of not seating bullets to the seating depth that was established during load development.

Of course, I read the numerous post / articles on the so called "bullet weld" and I've done some testing on loads that were not used during a season or two that remained sitting. However, I have yet to detect any difference in performance on target for these loads. Perhaps this is due to the fact that my accuracy standards (1/2 to 5/8 moa) are modest compared to benchrest or "F" class long range competitors.

I also wonder why premium ammo I've seen at the range performs so well that has remain loaded on dealers' shelves for indefinite and variable amounts of time.

It would seem to me that not seating bullets to the service length creates a potential for problems if the shooter forgets to reseat. Perhaps this is a problem for only seniors, but I have enough to remember when I go to the range or hunting, and I could guarantee if I adopted this practice I was surely forget at some point and end up at that range with ammo that I couldn't use. :(:(

For me, 'travel' means something where I'm either driving or flying 1000+ miles and the ammo containers either being in the bed of a vehicle subject to road vibration, pot holes, etc. or having to ship it ahead and trust it to the folks at UPS, etc. I'd invite you to take a box of your ammo, and drop it from a height of several feet - repeatedly - and then measure the CBTO. It might not move - if you're lucky - but when spending money on travel, etc. is that really a chance you want to take?

Oh! I haven't travel 1,000 miles in over 20 years and never to go hunting. Thanks for the invitation but I am declining, I drop enough things every day without intentionally dropping my reloads 'several feet'. However, I believe you or least I choose not to test your assertion. ;)

You must have experienced some significant CBTO changes thus I now understand the purpose behind your post. No criticism was intended, just trying to understand the issue of seating them long.
