Pilot bushings

Well Phil “4Mesh” a past successful 1K competitor used to do just about that. He did pretty well CNC’ing his chambers with a boring bar. He also made his own sizing dies and his own version of a Lee collet die. I believe at one point he stated he had never used a chamber reamer.

Was he rigid?

Nate at Straight Shot at one time was experimenting with single point boring chambers. He posted somewhere the tooling he had made up. No if he continued.

What's your thought on pre DRILLING then using a piloted reamer against a dead centre to form cut a tapered hole then switching to a floating reamer holder and removing the pilot to do the rest. Sounds really messed up but I've seen the results
A hard pass from me. Stuff a single point after the drill and I'll play.

@INTJ, We're all good. This is a wired thread, though it has some great info and thought in it! It has drifted like a drunken pilot on an NDB approach with a gusty crosswind over hilly terrain.

So interesting to participate in these threads where you have just enough experience to understand even if I can't do it on my own quite yet. It's like following a recipe but not knowing what to do if things start to go wrong.

I was waiting on a tighter bushing to come in before chambering the barrel I've been working on, but plan on using a much smaller one now. Will be interesting to see the results.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Hank

I wouldn't have thought you would get anywhere near good enough surface finish from single pointing a chamber. Often wondered what whidden and other places that make custom dies do. Would be very expensive to have a reamer or reamers made for every customer.

You know i wondered that exact same thing about the “custom” die makers

I do not use reamers. Sine bars on id and od grinder and lathe. Every die is different. I'm working 5, 6.5 creeds right now and the diameters, and taper angle are the same on only ,two of the five. Every one gets its own arbor ground to fit.
Just goes to show how a lot of folks have no idea how to use a reamer, or a lathe for that matter.

Im sure no machinist and so Im glad there are guys with your experience here to explain these things. Thanks much for your help Alan.

There are carbide mini boring bar holders.
I know- I use Micro-100 ones for boring after pre-drilling. They still deflect- even with a higher moduli of elasticity compared to steel.
I've not seen one 3" long that'll fit in a 1/4" hole, and even if there is such an animal there's very little cutting pressure that can be placed on them before SNAP. I've got small pile of skinny carbide bars that I pushed too hard...

Maybe because it's CNC the code calls for a gazillion pecks at .001, no idea. I'm just wondering how this is actually executed, beyond the theory. You'd have to prove it to me that a chamber can be bored with the exacting precision of a precision ground form tool- not buying it.

Phil sent me pics of the boring bars he used. He did it with multiple boring bars. For the final passes he had a heavy shank section with an offset small head section that would fit in the neck area. I didn't see him do but we talked a lot about it. I have no reason to doubt the man. He was beyond smart.
