The BS of reloading some cartridges today.

Ok here I am loading up a bunch of mixed brass 30 carbine, all once fired by me. Head stamps, FC, WW, R-P PPU and PMC. Let's face it gang if you're going to whine about mixed brass, all the accuracy, the SD of the loads that I'm sacrificing, you don't know crap about the 30 Carbine and best you move on. The gist of this is that I'm reloading for about 25% the cost of new cartridges, for a fun carbine keeping 200 yard prone hits on 9" paper plates, most in the 6" center, having fun with my children and grandchildren, not winning bench rest matches.

I measured up a handful of each type and while none were too long they varied too much to make seating, removing the bell for reliable functionality possible, in my opinion.

Now here's the process, after measuring 30 of the unsized cases I picked the shortest to trim to. That was 1.266" which is .014" under minimum. Out of 387 cases about 10% of all but one type would not completely true up at that length, it was 20% of the other type. Meaning that the trimmed edge of those were not completely cleaned up. I use an RCBS Pro Trim which I like it only runs about 80 RPM and the case length variations are very small.

I use a carbide die set by RCBS, I keep my hands gooey with Unique case lube anyway. After sizing they measured 1.280 to 1.28, I kept the one that couldn't be trued up separate but I'll load them anyway.

I guess they all cut them as short as possible to save money!

Why not teach the kids and grand kids the prep process and let them sort the brass and prep it too?

They have better eye than us, and good reflexes. After all, isn't this how many of us were brought up, learning brass prep as the cost of the plinking time?

Anyway, good on you for taking the time to take those kiddos out and spending the time with them, they will remember it when we are gone.

Already into the second stage, Levi helped me sort and trim the brass. I'm like a heroine dealer, I goth him and his sister hooked on shooting so mow working to get there makes sense to them.

BTW my boy already reloads, I told him not to nuy the gear as he would get mine.

Why bother trimming in the first place? Straight-wall case? Not trying to be a smart ass- never bothered on any of mine- from 40 S&W, up through 10mm, and even my 458 Lott, never done it, never needed it?

Started my son at 7. Gave him my 1974 rock chucker and some other stuff to get him started. He loves it. He will get my stuff after I'm gone. Hope he brings a big truck!
Did a similar thing with my kids that way there's no mystery in the gun room even when they were in nappies used to sit them on my knee and pull the handle down on the press by the time they were 5 years old they could give you load recipes maximum length and how they grouped it was great still is now my two sons can shoot better than me I'm proud as punch

I never loaded for 40 S&W or 10MM, however my 9MM, 45 ACP, 38 SPCL and 44 mag brass always seem to be shorter than SAAMI minimum anyway. My 357 Sig hasn't been reloaded enough for me to see any growth past SAAMI max. Even though my 444 Marlin and 450 Marlin require a crimp into the cannelure they have never needed trimmed, of course they don't get fired lots of times.

The 30 Carbine rifles were made in the 1940's by a dozen manufacturers with the tolerances possible in those days and when loading for them especially if the reloads will be used in multiple rifles being conservative on case length is prudent. That might be why the factory brass was all over the place.

Crimping gets really inconsistent if case lengths vary. That, of course, assumes you're crimping.
