My new 300 WSM

Well I finished load development on my new 300 WSM I built myself. I wanted to do a compact setup so I went with a 22" Benchmark carbon barrel since Im running a suppressor. The reamer is set up for 205 gr Bergers but will work for others in that weight class including the 215s. Contrary to popular belief it was easy to get my Defiance XM to feed in a mdt detachable magazine. I moved the hole forward .275 that has the spring go through it. This put more pressure on the front of the follower and would keep the round inline when getting chambered. Feeds flawless and won't go below the feed ramp like people have experienced w this combo. Very first load I tried out of this barrel to break it in shot in the .3s at 100.

After the barrel settled down for velocity I decided to do a powder charge test. ADG Brass, Reloader 23 is pushing a 205 berger at 2860 fps with an es of 12 for 10 shots. I didn't hit pressure til 2935 fps. There was another node at 2900 but I didn't wanna be that close to pressure since it was less than a gr from hitting it. Picked the milder 2860 fps node. 4 seating depths later it shot a 3 shot group that measured .195" @ 100 yds. I decided to load 3 more rounds to verify at 580 yds. Heres the group it shot at 580 in a 10 mph wind. 1.5" tall by 3.0" wide. More than happy with it in those conditions.

While breaking the barrel in with a super mild load at 2650 fps I decided to shoot two 3 shot groups in a row at 580 yds. One measured .6" and the other measured 1.2". This cartridge has been about the easiest magnum Ive seen to load for that Ive seen. While breaking the barrel in I tried 3 different neck tensions and seating depths from .015-.060 off. It shot everything 1/2" or better with most being in the .3 moa range.

Im expecting 2000+ round barrel life with peak accuracy since this will be only shot cold bore. Plugging in the ballistics of a 205 at 2860 youll see its pretty much identical in the wind compared to the 6.5 prc,saum/shermans etc with a 156. However it has 20% more energy at 1000 and way more barrel life. Very easy to keep in tune and minimal throat erosion.

Rifle has the following:

Defiance ANTIX XM length w nitride
Manners LRH
Benchmark 22" 30 cal 10 tw sendero light
Hawkins Bottom metal
Modified MDT magazines
Triggertech Diamond
Thunderbeast Dominus SR Suppressor
Nightforce ATACR 4-20x50 bedded into a set of NF Rings

Rifle weighs 11.0 lbs with optics and suppressor.

What brass are you using? Nice results, im like 3 grains less than you tho with berger 208’s at the same velocity in a 24” using norma cases. Rl23 and the wsm works very well

You gotta love the 300 WSM. It’s such an easy cartridge to load for.

That benchmark carbon barrel is shooting well….are you phasing out Proof? They seem to have been getting a lot of bad press lately.

Ive only had 7 bad proofs in like 4 years. Thats out of hundreds Ive done for customers. If indicated and chambered correctly they will shoot great. Some of the bad press youve seen is due to a certain individual promising sky high psi velocities for his cartridges he sells. When people cant get the velocities he claims its easy to blame the barrel. Ive talked to a pile of people in the industry about it and they all agree he needs to buy a pressure trace system. Its not "efficiency". Its high psi loads. ADG brass just hides the pressure signs really well. In hornady brass he admitted those loads are one and done.

Beautiful build Ryan! Can you share a pic of the magazine mod? Just curious is all.

Literally just drilled a hole .275 further forward on the follower where the spring goes through it. Put the spring through that hole and it changed the follower to where the front has more pressure and won't let the round nose dive. Took like a minute for the modification.

So I decided to do some more testing with my 300 wsm and try out some lower nodes. The next lower node was almost a grain wide. After doing the powder charge test I loaded up 3 in the middle of it and it shot a 3 shot .243"@100 yds and had a ES of 2 fps. I figured thatll work so I loaded up 3 and shot them at 580 yds. Same velocity and it appeared to be well under 1/2 moa vertical. Went back in the shop and loaded 3 more up and sent em down range. They impacted in the same spot. I had 2.4"/.39 moa of vertical at 580 yds for 6 shots and a ES of 8 fps for the 3 at 100 and 6 at 580, 9 shots total. Since then Ive taken it out and shot some amazing groups with it.

1010 yds a few weeks ago and shot a 3.1" group for 4 shots.
5 shot group at 580 yds with 1.5" vertical.
Took it out last weekend and shot a 3 shot group at 630 yds that had maybe 1/4" of vertical.
Those groups were shot with the NF 4-20 ATACR.
Lower node is only pushing a 205 berger at 2730 fps in my 22" barrel but you cant argue with the results on target. And I can get away with cleaning every 50 rounds while shooting suppressed.

All shot with the NF 4-20 ATACR.

Heres a pic of it with a 3 round magazine that doesn't stick out as much.

Those poor poor calipers. Lol. eveyone has that tool that just never gives up.

Well I got to try out the 300 wsm and 205 elite hunters on a deer last weekend. Wasn't a far shot. 250 yds broadside. I aimed and hit behind the crease of the shoulder slightly so I didn't lose two quarters of meat. It didn't hit a rib on the entrance to initiate expansion. It did manage to pretty much liquify the lungs and left a exit hole on the ribs between the size of a golf ball and orange. She went about 100 yds before piling up. The blood trail was really impressive. Ray Charles could of followed it. Really happy with the performance for not hitting anything hard to initiate expansion and also since my muzzle velocity isn't super fast. 2730 fps at the muzzle, 2400 fps at impact.

Nice. Amazing they can still go that far being hit like that. I got a doe this year at 576 with the 208 long range hybrid and it didnt quite behave like the normal vld but did good, heart shot and still ran almost 100 yrds but atleast it was running towards the truck

thats good to hear the 208 worked. im gonna try it in a new barrel im spinning up for myself. gonna test the 208 and 215 in it
