M-M-M-M Donuts

I'm surprised your getting donuts going from 257 Roberts to 6mm Rem.

I haven't had the issue going from 7X57 Mauser to 257 Roberts.

I do have some cases that were given to me that were 30-06 necked to 25-06. Huge donuts in them!

That reminds me!
Need to get a 25 cal ID neck reamer!

We might not have this Forum, which started as 6mmBR.com, had I not grown so frustrated with the doughnuts in my .260 Rem (necked down from .308 or necked up from .243 Win) that I swapped to a 6mmBR using Lapua 6mmBR brass. Bonus was, as you'd expect, considerably less recoil and far superior accuracy.

I just saw that neck reamer posted by someone on M4carbine.net. I may have to get one in 30 cal. I have a box of 300WM that I mash rings into the bullet ogive when seating.

Not all had donuts only about 80%. They were just big enough to not the bullet pass through the neck.

Can you actually see or feel donuts? I think I may have them.

How far up the case necks will they usually go? Wondering how far ahead of the neck junction I need to seat to avoid them

Yes if they are large enough to be a problem the way I found doughnuts in my 260 brass which was necked up from 243 is take a fired case slide a projectile in and where the shank boattail Junction hits the neck shoulder Junction of the case it will stop I did the same as previously stated push them to the outside with a mandrel and then took a light skim with a neck Turner at the neck shoulder Junction then fire formed no more problems for the life of the brass.
One thing I neglected to mention is I size the case before pushing the doughnut outside

I must be lucky, I have necked UP thousands of cases and never had a donut issue (majority 223).

Necking down, some worse than others. The 20 and 22 BR were not as bad as I thought they may be. I am wondering if the 20 may show its ugly head after a firing or two.

I noticed some members suggested doing a light skim and removing the doughnut. Would that weaken the neck where the doughnut is removed? I don't know so gotta ask as it appears I recently got some doughnuts. Also, is it possible to get a small doughnut and not have any issues with seating a bullet?

If you are seating your bullets above the donut, you won't even know they are there.

I fall into a different thought process on this. Donuts are much more significant and prevalent with bushing dies imo. Yes, my opinion. The adverse effects may not be seating a bullet as they are above the neck shoulder junction most of the time. I see neck tension being affected adversely. Neck tension can be manipulated in many ways. Uneven brass is inconsistent brass/ turned necks lighten tension and make things more consistent. Brass flows every firing...and it isnt just in length. Brass is almost alive. Just like a carbide mandrel can help iron out donuts with turning, a bushing pushing down around the case neck helps to promote a donut in my mind and typically on freshly annealed brass. Brass is soft. No arguments here...jmo
